Samsung is reportedly aiming for a thinner Galaxy Z Fold7 while still supporting the S Pen, similar to the recently launched Z Fold Special Edition. Accordingly, the company will remove the traditional digitizer – the main component responsible for stylus input.

The digitizer is used to enable electromagnetic resonance (EMR) technology, which has been part of the Galaxy Z Fold line since the Galaxy Z Fold3. It creates an electric field on the screen, allowing for precise stylus input without the need for batteries. However, this technology contributes to the device's thickness, thus forcing a trade-off between stylus input capabilities and slimness.
Industry sources reveal that Samsung Electronics is actively considering implementing digital-free stylus input technology for the Z Fold7. This would be a strategy aimed at making the foldable phone thinner – a priority in the competitive market for this product.
To address this issue, Samsung is considering a new technology similar to Apple's Active Electrostatic (AES) method. AES transfers the technology from the main screen to the stylus – the stylus would have a small battery and electronic components that generate the necessary electrical input. This might make the stylus thicker and require charging, but it would allow for a thinner phone body.
The source also revealed that this technology will be applied first to the Galaxy Z Fold7 model launching next year.
