The results of the 2024 capacity assessment exam of Ho Chi Minh City National University are one of the four admission methods of the affiliated universities, even some other schools also use this result.

Up to this point, about 96 universities and colleges will use the exam results for admission. Ho Chi Minh City National University affirmed that, as usual, the exam assesses candidates' basic abilities for university study such as: language use, logical thinking, data processing, problem solving. In terms of format, the exam consists of 120 objective multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 150 minutes.
The test structure consists of 3 parts: Language use; Mathematics, logical thinking, data analysis and Problem solving to assess candidates' basic abilities for university study.
The test focuses on assessing the candidate’s reasoning and problem-solving abilities, not on his or her ability to memorize. Taking the test will help candidates have more chances to be admitted to the major and school that best suits their choice.
For many years, Ho Chi Minh City National University has organized the competency assessment exam but has not announced the exam questions. Previously, there were several incidents such as the loss of the exam questions even though they were not complete. The reason for not announcing the exam, shared with VietNamNet, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh, Director of the Center for Testing and Training Quality Assessment, Ho Chi Minh City National University said: Ho Chi Minh City National University's viewpoint is very clear, the exam is to evaluate the learning process of the candidates, so studying is important, the exam is not important.
“The test questions are broad and general, assessing the basic abilities of candidates. If we announce the test questions at the end of the exam, we are promoting testing, not promoting learning. Society will be interested in practicing the test questions or tricks to solve the test well - this is not the policy of Ho Chi Minh City National University. The policy is to consider the exam very easy, the candidates' learning is the most important.”

On the other hand, according to Dr. Chinh, the announcement of the exam questions does not affect or improve the quality of the exam, nor does it improve the ability of candidates when studying. On the contrary, it makes society misunderstand that Ho Chi Minh City National University is interested in the exam, not in studying.
“Until now, we have remained steadfast. The fact that society knows about the 120 questions of the competency assessment test does not have a good value in terms of academic development, but has a bad effect on the orientation of exam preparation. We care about the quality of learning, not how candidates prepare for the exam.”
Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh also shared that currently, the question bank for the competency assessment exam of Ho Chi Minh City National University is very large with thousands of questions. From this bank, if each exam has 120 questions, the number of question combinations is extremely large. Every year, after the exam is over, the questions that have been tested are not reused, Ho Chi Minh City National University continues to add more questions to the bank.
“Therefore, the probability of candidates practicing some exam questions in the hope of getting the right answer or finding a way to do it is extremely low. We advise candidates not to practice,” Mr. Chinh emphasized.
