For more than 2 weeks now, the price of ST rice on the market has suddenly increased sharply, making consumers and rice businesses restless. Some units even do not dare to import much because of the unpredictable fluctuations in rice prices.
Price increased from 4,000 to 5,000 VND/kg
Surveying the retail market in Nha Trang City, all types of ST rice have increased in price since the end of December 2023. On average, this type of rice has increased by about 500 VND/kg per day, and has now increased by about 4,000 to 5,000 VND/kg. According to traders, this is an unprecedented record increase for this product. Specifically, ST25 branded bags are currently priced at 30,000 to 35,000 VND/kg depending on the type; ST24 is also at 26,000 to 27,000 VND/kg; ST21 from 24,000 to 25,000 VND/kg. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien (An Binh Tan Urban Area, Phuoc Long Ward, Nha Trang) said: “In the past, my family often ate Loc Phuong rice, but recently, the price of this type of rice has increased, while the price of ST rice is quite stable, so the difference between the two types is not much. Therefore, I switched to using ST25 rice. On the morning of January 9, I stopped by a rice shop on Tran Nguyen Han Street (Nha Trang) to buy 2 bags of ST25 rice, 5kg/bag, but the shop owner quoted the price at 320,000 VND, 50,000 VND/bag higher than the last time I bought it. The shop owner explained that for the past 2 weeks, the price of ST rice on the market has increased sharply.”

Explaining the reason for the increase in ST rice prices, some rice traders in Nha Trang said that recently, ST25 rice continued to win the award for the world's best rice, attracting the attention of consumers as well as rice importers from countries such as China, the US... In addition, in the past few months, the prices of common fragrant rice from the West have continuously increased, leading to a small difference between common rice and high-end rice, so many consumers switched to using ST rice... High demand and limited supply have pushed up the price of ST rice.
The owner of a rice shop on Tran Nguyen Han Street said that the imported price of ST rice has increased, but the shop does not dare to increase it according to the market price because it mainly sells to regular customers. In addition to the increase in the price of ST rice, since the beginning of November, the prices of other types of fragrant rice from the West and local sticky rice have also increased by about 500 to 1,000 VND/kg. The lowest price of rice on the market today is field-blooming rice at 16,000 to 16,500 VND/kg; Ninh Hoa sticky rice at 17,500 VND/kg. The demand for Ninh Hoa sticky rice is also increasing, but the shop finds it difficult to import goods to sell. The reason is that it is not yet the crop season, so the amount of rice in the population is limited, partly because distributors are hoarding goods.
Supermarket stabilizes rice prices
Faced with the situation of high ST rice prices on the market, many supermarket chains in Nha Trang such as: GO!, MM Mega Market; Co.opmart; Bach hoa xanh... still keep prices stable. Some supermarkets even carry out discount promotions to help stabilize rice prices on the market. According to supermarket representatives, the reason why the units can still keep prices, and even apply discounts on some types of rice is because most of the units have good reserves and have signed long-term contracts with suppliers in advance.
Mr. Mai Xuan An - Marketing Team Leader of Co.opmart Nha Trang Supermarket said that over the past few months, the rice prices of the Saigon Co.op system have remained stable, not increasing according to the prices on the retail market. In addition, the supermarket also applies a promotional program to reduce prices from 5 to 30% on some types of rice. Specifically, Dai Thom 8 Coop Select rice costs 116,000 VND, reduced to 99,000 VND/5kg; Nang Hoa Coop Select rice 5kg bag costs 125,000 VND, reduced to 105,000 VND; ST21 Coop Select rice costs 130,000 VND, reduced to 115,000 VND/kg; ST24 Coop Finest rice 5kg bag costs 149,000 VND, buy 2 bags for 248,000 VND; ST25 rice, Coop Finest shrimp rice, price 199,000 VND/bag, buy 2 bags for 288,000 VND.
Similarly, at Go! Nha Trang Supermarket, in addition to stabilizing rice prices over the past few months, the supermarket also has a promotion program for some types of rice. Accordingly, when customers buy a Go! premium fragrant rice product in a 5kg bag priced at VND150,000/bag, they can buy an additional product at VND95,000/bag; Go! Japonica rice in a 5kg bag priced at VND143,000 is reduced to VND137,000... Lotte Mart Nha Trang Supermarket also applies a discount on fragrant sticky rice with green label in a 5kg bag from VND231,000 to VND190,900...
