Many years ago, betel nut prices in Quang Ngai were volatile, sometimes dropping as low as 5,000 VND/kg. However, in the last three months, betel nut prices have remained stable at 55,000 - 65,000 VND/kg, bringing great joy to farmers. Quang Ngai, famous for its vast betel nut cultivation area, is mainly concentrated in Son Tay district with about 1,000 hectares, and Nghia Hanh district also has a large betel nut growing area. Statistically measuring betel nut cultivation area is difficult because many farmers grow them in orchards, intercropping, or scattered plots.
Currently, traders from all over are flocking to the villages of Quang Ngai to buy fresh betel nuts. Mr. Tran Van Nam, a farmer in Hanh Duc commune, Nghia Hanh district, shared with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper that his family grows 400 betel nut trees, which are currently in their peak season. Each mature betel nut tree (planted for 5-6 years) yields an average of about 4 bunches of betel nuts per year. With the current price of betel nuts at 60,000 VND/kg, each tree brings farmers about 700,000 VND in profit. This is a high profit margin that few other crops in Quang Ngai can match.
Betel nuts from Quang Ngai are mainly exported to the Chinese market. When demand from this market increases, the price of betel nuts usually rises as well. After purchasing, the betel nuts are steamed, dried, and resold to traders for export to China, India, and other countries.
Son Tay District, with nearly 1,000 hectares of betel nut plantations, is known as the "land of a thousand betel nuts." Currently, about 500 hectares of betel nuts here are in the harvesting season. The record-high price of betel nuts has led many orchard owners to set up tents in their gardens to sleep overnight in order to protect their nuts from theft.
Speaking with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Pham Hong Khuyen, Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Son Tay District, said that local people are very happy with the sudden increase in betel nut prices. Many betel nut orchards, even with unripe fruit, are being bought up by traders in their entirety. Betel nuts in Son Tay District are famous for being grown using clean methods, without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides, making them very popular with foreign partners. The processing technology of countries importing betel nuts from Vietnam is also very advanced, creating many diverse products from betel nuts.
