Crab prices increase

(KGO) - In early June 2025, the price of sea crabs in coastal districts of Kien Giang province increased from 50,000 - 100,000 VND/kg compared to the same period in 2024. Traders flocked to the square to buy, pushing the price of crabs to the highest level since the beginning of the year.

Farmers in Hung Yen commune (An Bien) harvest crabs.

In An Bien district, grade 1 crabs are purchased at prices ranging from 550,000 - 600,000 VND/kg. Y crabs cost from 280,000 - 300,000 VND/kg, while quad crabs (4 crabs/kg) range from 180,000 - 200,000 VND/kg depending on the firmness of the meat.

According to crab farmers in Kien Giang , this year's weather has been erratic, with hot weather alternating with unseasonal rain, causing the farming environment to change constantly, affecting the water source, causing the crab seed to not reach the first level. Mr. Nguyen Van Hua, residing in Cai Nuoc hamlet, Hung Yen commune (An Bien) said: "At the beginning of the season, I released 6,000 crab seeds on an area of 1.5 hectares, but so far I have only caught more than 50 kg of crab meat, a decrease of about 40% compared to 2024".

Mr. Tran Duy An, a crab trader in An Bien district, said that the output of commercial crabs has decreased sharply, especially crab with roe, down 30-50% compared to the same period last year because farmers did not raise them well.

It is forecasted that if the shortage continues, crab prices may continue to increase.
