Crab prices are rising.

(KGO) - In early June 2025, the price of sea crabs in coastal districts of Kien Giang province increased by 50,000 - 100,000 VND/kg compared to the same period in 2024. Traders flocked to the farms to buy crabs, pushing the price to its highest level since the beginning of the year.

Farmers in Hung Yen commune (An Bien district) are harvesting crabs.

In An Bien district, grade 1 female crabs with roe are purchased at prices ranging from 550,000 to 600,000 VND/kg. Male crabs are priced from 280,000 to 300,000 VND/kg, while four-clawed crabs (meat crabs of size 4 crabs/kg) range from 180,000 to 200,000 VND/kg depending on meat firmness.

According to crab farmers in Kien Giang , this year's weather has been erratic, with alternating periods of hot weather and unseasonal rain, causing constant changes in the farming environment and affecting water sources, resulting in low yields for crab larvae. Mr. Nguyen Van Hua, residing in Cai Nuoc hamlet, Hung Yen commune (An Bien district), said: “At the beginning of the season, I released 6,000 crab larvae on an area of 1.5 hectares, but so far I've only caught over 50 kg of mature crabs, a decrease of about 40% compared to 2024.”

Mr. Tran Duy An, a crab trader in An Bien district, said that the production of commercial crabs has decreased sharply, especially female crabs with roe, down 30-50% compared to the same period last year due to farmers' failure to achieve satisfactory results.

Forecasts suggest that if the shortage continues, the price of crab may continue to rise.
