National target program contributes to changing the face of rural Kien Giang

After 5 years of implementing the national target program on new rural construction and the national target program on sustainable poverty reduction, Kien Giang has achieved many important and comprehensive results, contributing practically to socio -economic development, improving people's lives, narrowing the development gap between regions, and strengthening people's trust in the leadership of the Party and authorities at all levels.

The rural appearance in the whole province has changed dramatically; rural infrastructure has been gradually invested in to be spacious, synchronous and modern; the rural environment is increasingly clean and beautiful; the material and spiritual life of people in rural areas is constantly improved; unique cultural values of ethnic groups are preserved and promoted.

Up to now, 100% of Kien Giang province's communes have been recognized as meeting new rural standards, achieving 100% of the plan; 40 communes have met advanced new rural standards, achieving 100% of the plan; 5 communes have met model new rural standards; 9/15 district and city-level units have met new rural standards/completed the task of building new rural areas.

From the source of implementing the national target program on sustainable poverty reduction in the 2021-2025 period, the province allocates capital to invest in developing socio-economic infrastructure in poor districts and extremely disadvantaged communes in coastal and island areas.

Localities in the province have implemented 110 projects to diversify livelihoods for poor and near-poor households; 286 projects to support production development in the agricultural sector, creating conditions for economic development and increasing income for nearly 1,678 poor households, households in need of poverty, households that have just escaped poverty and people with disabilities.

The province has paid attention to poverty reduction and social security policies through supporting exemption and reduction of tuition fees for 25,000 students; granting 304,296 free health insurance cards to the poor, ethnic minorities living in difficult and extremely difficult communes, people in island communes, near-poor households, etc.; supporting electricity bills for 19,728 poor households; creating jobs for 37,106 people; creating conditions for poor households, near-poor households, and newly escaped poverty households to get preferential loans to develop production, with outstanding loans of over 1,025 billion VND. The poverty rate has decreased from 2.57% in 2021 to 0.99% in 2024.

Speaking at the conference, Member of the Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Kien Giang province Giang Thanh Khoa, on behalf of the provincial leaders and the Steering Committee for National Target Programs of Kien Giang province, acknowledged, highly appreciated and commended the contributions and dedication of agencies, units, localities, organizations, businesses and people in the work of building new rural areas and sustainable poverty reduction in Kien Giang province over the past 5 years.

The Provincial People's Committee highly appreciated the sense of responsibility, proactiveness and creativity of localities, units and people in implementing the program. Good models and effective methods shared at the conference will be valuable experiences for localities to learn and apply appropriately in practice.

At the historic moment of implementing the innovation revolution, streamlining the state administrative apparatus according to the 2-level local government model and better implementing the work of building new rural areas and sustainable poverty reduction in the next period, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Giang Thanh Khoa requested departments, branches and localities to continue to enhance the role and responsibility of Party committees and authorities, especially leaders in directing, operating, mobilizing and effectively using resources.

Strengthen propaganda and mobilization work, promote the role of people and communities in building new rural areas and reducing poverty. Focus on developing production, increasing income for people, especially in ethnic minority areas, remote and isolated areas. Strengthen supervision and inspection work, ensure publicity and transparency, avoid formalities and chasing achievements. Proactively propose and recommend mechanisms and policies suitable to local practices for the Central Government to consider and support.
