With outstanding natural advantages, proactive planning and commitment to improving the investment environment, Gia Lai province is gradually affirming its position as the clean energy center of the Central Highlands region. Not only aiming for green growth, the province also lays the foundation for a sustainable economic -technical-educational ecosystem.

Abundant resource potential

After the merger, Gia Lai province has a natural area of over 21,500km2 , the second largest in the country and is located in the center of the east-west and north-south traffic axes, adjacent to the Central Coast region and has a connecting corridor with Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand. With diverse terrain, typical climate and rich ecosystem, Gia Lai has all the favorable factors to develop renewable energy types such as wind power, solar power, hydropower, biomass power, waste power and geothermal power.

According to experts, the average solar radiation intensity in Gia Lai is from 4.6 to 5.2 kWh/m 2 /day, with a total of 1,900-2,200 hours of sunshine per year. This is an ideal condition for implementing ground-mounted solar power projects and floating solar power projects on large irrigation lakes such as Nui Mot, Thuan Ninh, Hoi Son, Dong Mit, Ia Ly, Se San, etc.

In addition, the average wind speed in many areas such as Kong Chro, Chu Prong, Mang Yang, Van Canh, Vinh Thanh... reaches about 6-7m/s, suitable for large-scale wind power development , both onshore and offshore. The Se San and Ba river systems, along with natural and artificial reservoirs, also create favorable conditions for hydropower development and hybrid energy models. It is estimated that the total renewable energy potential of the whole province is currently estimated at 23,000MW, enough to make Gia Lai become the renewable industrial center of the Central Highlands region.

Up to now, the province has 61 hydropower projects with a total capacity of 2,736 MW; 17 wind power projects with a total capacity of 916 MW; 7 solar power projects with a total capacity of 590 MWp and 2 biomass power projects with a total capacity of 130 MW. These projects have all been put into commercial operation, showing that the locality's implementation and coordination capacity in the energy sector is quite positive.

Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee Pham Anh Tuan said that in recent times, the province has deployed and put into commercial operation many renewable energy projects, contributing to providing a stable power source for the national power system. At the same time, it has created tens of thousands of jobs, increased income for people, contributed to the local budget and promoted the development of service, trade and logistics sectors.

In particular, the province has proactively built a mechanism to attract investment, improve the business environment, publicize the project list and conduct transparent bidding on the National Bidding Network. The investment call is linked to the criteria of sustainable development, environmental protection, ensuring social security and developing local human resources.

According to the adjusted Power Plan VIII, the total capacity of renewable energy projects in the province is planned to develop more than 9,600 MW, creating a foundation for Gia Lai to become a clean and sustainable energy center of the region.

Set sustainable development goals

Identifying human resources as a key factor in renewable energy development, Gia Lai province has announced the implementation of the Renewable Energy Human Resources Training and Development Center project, implemented by a consortium of GEO Group (Federal Republic of Germany) and O-DOOR Vietnam Co., Ltd., with the support of Quy Nhon University, the main training unit.

The center will aim to develop an internationally standardized training program, including practical wind turbine operation (onshore/offshore), solar power systems, green hydrogen technology, occupational safety certification (GWO) and the application of modern technologies such as AI, IoT, Big Data in energy operations. In addition, the center also organizes technology exhibitions, seminars, international internship programs and short-term training courses for businesses, technical staff and students.

Associate Professor, Dr. Doan Duc Tung, Rector of Quy Nhon University, said, “We not only train technicians but also aim to build an ecosystem of education , research, and innovation in the field of renewable energy. We expect to train a new generation of energy engineers who are not only good at their profession, but also have a global mindset and the ability to work in an international environment. This is an opportunity for Quy Nhon University to promote its strengths and at the same time make a practical contribution to the country's green development strategy.”

Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee Pham Anh Tuan informed that in the coming time, Gia Lai province will continue to promote administrative procedure reform, complete transmission infrastructure, build a flexible capacity release mechanism, while strengthening environmental protection, ensuring social security and community development.

The province will also deploy hybrid energy models such as floating solar power combined with hydropower, wind power combined with a battery energy storage system (BESS), and apply digital technology in the management and operation of the power system. These are directions in line with the trend of developing modern, smart and sustainable energy in the spirit of Resolution No. 57 of the Politburo on breakthroughs in science and technology development and national digital transformation.

Sharing about this issue, the Deputy Director of the Electricity and Renewable Energy Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) highly appreciated the efforts of Gia Lai province in implementing renewable energy projects. At the same time, he affirmed that the Electricity Department will always accompany, prioritize, commit to support and create maximum conditions to resolve Gia Lai province's proposals related to renewable energy so that the ideas and commitments will soon become real projects. Thereby bringing specific results, bringing benefits to the locality, the country and the international community.

With high determination, the synchronous participation of the entire political system, the consensus of the people and the companionship of enterprises, Gia Lai province is gradually realizing the goal of becoming a clean energy center of the region, making an important contribution to the cause of socio-economic development, environmental protection and international integration of the country.
