Rice prices in Thailand have risen sharply.

VTV.vn - Rice prices in Thailand surged at the beginning of 2026, with Hom Mali fragrant rice reaching its highest level in years, thanks to government policies supporting the market and farmers.

The Thai Department of Internal Trade announced on January 5th that key government mechanisms for managing the cost of living, controlling the agricultural market, and supporting businesses at all levels have led to a significant improvement in rice prices across the country.

Specifically, the price of white rice in Thailand has risen to over 8,000 baht/ton (US$255/ton), while the price of Hom Mali fragrant rice ranges from 14,700 - 16,100 baht/ton (US$468.55 - US$513.17/ton), and even up to 18,000 baht/ton (US$573.73/ton) in some areas. Pathum Thani rice prices range from 8,000 - 8,300 baht/ton (US$255 - US$264.55/ton) and glutinous rice from 7,000 - 10,000 baht/ton (US$223.12 - US$318.74/ton). Accordingly, Hom Mali rice saw the highest price increase, rising to 1,000 baht/ton (US$31.78/ton), while regular rice increased by 400 baht/ton (US$12.75/ton), marking one of the best prices of the season.

This is the result of measures implemented by Thailand's National Rice Policy and Management Committee (NRPMC), including the deployment of over 50 rice market projects in 32 provinces. These initiatives have enabled businesses to purchase directly from producers at an average price 200-400 baht/ton (US$6.73-12.75/ton) higher than the general market price.

In addition, the Thai Department of Internal Trade has implemented measures such as delaying sales, opening off-regional purchasing points, and inspecting the procurement of key agricultural products including feed corn, cassava, rice, and palm oil to prevent price manipulation and ensure fairness for farmers.

The Thai Department of Internal Trade has also upgraded Thai agricultural products through the DIT X MasterChef Thailand project. This project aims to raise awareness that Thai agricultural raw materials can be upgraded into high-value products and expand distribution channels by connecting agricultural products with modern trading partners and gas stations. Furthermore, collaborations such as DIT X AirAsia serving Thai agricultural products on flights and DIT X Tao Bin selling farmers' fruit through Tao Bin vending machines have significantly increased market opportunities.

For small businesses, the Thai Department of Internal Trade has supported businesses in border areas to connect with markets outside the region, subsidizing transportation through postal services and collaborating with TikTok to expand online sales channels. Additionally, the Department has supported dairy cooperatives and small businesses in expanding their market reach and upgrading local businesses through "Trade Village" and "Farm Outlet" projects to connect domestic and international markets, generate income, and strengthen the local economy .

In the next phase, the Department of Domestic Trade will continue to expand key measures, such as strengthening distribution channels through the Mobile Blue Flag platform, expanding the "Good Health, Happy Wallet" project to include essential medical supplies, continuing the DIT X Heliconia Plus collaboration, and expanding the market for promising Thai agricultural products. These efforts aim to manage the cost of living, improve income, and create fair trade for all segments of the population.
