Malaysia develops new durian variety, hopes to expand trade in next 5 years
While the Vietnamese market is temporarily stable, Malaysia - a country with a growing durian industry - is conducting research and development of the MS88 hybrid durian variety to serve long-term commercial goals.
According to Malay Mail, the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) has planted more than 13,000 MS88 durian trees nationwide. It is expected that within the next 5-6 years, this new variety will be eligible for widespread commercial distribution.
However, farming is facing many challenges due to climate change, especially prolonged rains and erratic weather, causing many regions such as Johor and Penang to record a 30% drop in output during this year's main harvest season.
However, some growers say the warmer weather has also caused durians to flower earlier and could yield an additional harvest in January – something that was previously rare. If this trend continues, it is possible that durians could be grown year-round in some areas.
