Following that, two "Confidence in Entering Grade 10" events for students and parents in Ho Chi Minh City will take place at the end of March 2025.
Guidance for studying and preparing for the exam.
At the "Confidence in Grade 10" event, teachers from the counseling team will share with students about study guidance and important points to prepare for the exam.
Mr. Luu Van Thong, principal of Dich Vong Secondary School (Cau Giay district, Hanoi), and a member of the counseling board, shared that the school had conducted prior surveys with students to understand their thoughts and desires for guidance.
Supporting graduating students is one of the tasks the school has included since the beginning of the school year, including content similar to the goals of the "Confidence Day for Entering Grade 10" initiated by Tuoi Tre newspaper.
Ms. Tran Thi Hai Yen, principal of Tran Phu High School (Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi), shared her thoughts on the school's participation in the event: "This is a good opportunity for schools to introduce the high school learning environment to 9th-grade students."
According to Ms. Yen, in previous years, the school usually arranged three groups of subjects for students to choose from: a group oriented towards natural sciences , a group oriented towards social sciences, and a comprehensive group with all subjects for students who did not have a clear direction from grade 10. Students who didn't know which direction to follow were present every year because parents and students at the junior high school level lacked information or weren't truly interested.
For these students, after a semester or a year when they have a clear direction, the school will facilitate the transition. However, if parents and students have sufficient information from the beginning to determine a clearer path, it will be less difficult as they will have to compensate for knowledge gaps to meet the requirements during the transition.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhiep, principal of Chu Van An High School for the Gifted - the host school of the event, said: "Every year, the school has to hold a meeting with parents of 10th-grade students to thoroughly discuss information related to the learning environment, regulations related to the curriculum, and especially guidance on choosing subjects..."
However, this is only done after students have been accepted into a school. Therefore, organizing an orientation day before students register their preferences for 10th grade is more meaningful, so that parents and children have information before choosing a school and are better prepared for entering a new level of education.
Many anxieties and questions
Information about the "Confidence Day for Entering Grade 10," organized for the first time in Hanoi by Tuoi Tre newspaper in collaboration with the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, has attracted much attention from parents and grade 9 students.
2025 is the year when the first cohort of 9th-grade students studying under the 2018 General Education Program will take the entrance exam to high school. The exam methods and questions have changed, and even the criteria for predicting and choosing preferences for 10th-grade admission have been disrupted.
This has caused anxiety among parents and students. "My biggest concern is how the 10th grade entrance exam will be organized? What will the third subject be besides literature and mathematics? The sooner the information is clear, the more reassured students will be in preparing," said Ms. H., a parent with a child in 9th grade at Chu Van An Secondary School (Hanoi).
Ms. Th., a parent in Ha Dong, shared: "This year, 9th-grade students started studying the new curriculum (2018 General Education Program) during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a long period of online learning."
Currently, due to new regulations on tutoring, the school no longer organizes extra classes on campus. Parents and children are worried. We want to attend the event to receive advice on how to prepare for the exams in the current context. Of course, we hope to receive information regarding the admission process for 10th grade as soon as possible."
Ms. Th. also said that in previous years, because the 10th grade entrance exam in Hanoi was stable, much data such as quotas, competition ratios, and cut-off scores for 10th grade in recent years were publicly available, helping parents and children to refer to and choose suitable schools based on their academic abilities. But this year, with a new exam, new exam questions, and possibly new admission regulations, it feels like "swimming" without direction.
According to Tuoi Tre newspaper, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training is currently urgently finalizing the draft plan for enrollment in the first grades of each level, including grade 10, for the 2025-2026 school year. Accordingly, enrollment into public grade 10 will be based on an entrance exam with three subjects: literature, mathematics, and a third subject chosen from the remaining subjects taught at the lower secondary level.
Many counseling resources for students
The "Confidence in Entering Grade 10" event in Hanoi will include a main counseling session with the participation and advice of teachers from the Department of Secondary Education (Ministry of Education and Training), the Secondary Education Department, the Examination and Quality Assurance Department (Hanoi Department of Education and Training), and principals of high schools and junior high schools.
In addition, there will be a psychological counseling area organized by psychology experts from Hanoi National University. The event will also include participation from several high schools in Hanoi...
Journalist NGUYỄN KHẮC CƯỜNG (Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Tuổi Trẻ Newspaper):
Helping students prepare mentally for a new level of education.
