Solutions for Dak Nong coffee to enter Europe

Việt NamViệt Nam24/09/2024

Dak Nong has about 142,000 hectares of coffee, with an output of more than 360,000 tons/crop. The province's coffee products are exported to dozens of countries, with an output of about 120,000 tons/year.

Dak Nong determined that coffee exports, especially to the European market, will face many difficulties and challenges in the coming years due to new regulations.

The quality of Dak Nong coffee is increasingly improved through compliance with high quality production processes.

From 30/12/2024, EUDR will be applied. From this point on, companies will not be able to export coffee to the European market without proving that their products are not related to deforestation after 31/12/2020. Dak Nong is one of the key regions for coffee export, so compliance with EUDR is urgent.

According to Mr. Pham Tuan Anh, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, recently, Dak Nong's forest management and agricultural production methods have been on the right track, in accordance with EURD principles.

Dak Nong has prioritized the protection of existing forest areas. The province does not allow forest areas to be destroyed for agricultural production. This is an important step forward to help Dak Nong comply with EUDR requirements and preserve environmental resources.

Experts believe that harvesting coffee with a high ripeness rate will be the solution to help improve the quality and value of Dak Nong coffee.
Dak Nong coffee must prove its origin is not deforested to be able to be exported to the European market.

Dak Nong also actively applies high technology in coffee production. The province focuses on producing high-quality, specialty, environmentally friendly coffee, helping to increase productivity and save resources.

According to Mr. Pham Tuan Anh, businesses, cooperatives, and people in Dak Nong are producing about 23,500 hectares of coffee, with an output of over 82,000 tons/year, meeting international certification standards such as GlobalGAP, Rainforest Alliance, UTZ Certified, or Organic. This is an important tool for Dak Nong coffee to penetrate the international market, especially the EU.

Dak Nong’s coffee production is also shifting towards organic. About 100 hectares of the province’s coffee are certified organic and hundreds of hectares are applying organic production processes.

"Organic farming is a global trend, helping to improve the quality of coffee products, meeting the strict requirements of the European market, which emphasizes sustainability and environmental friendliness," said Mr. Pham Tuan Anh.

Dak Nong pays special attention to international cooperation in coffee production. The locality has coordinated with major organizations such as the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) to implement sustainable coffee production projects.

High quality coffee processing is still quite modest in Dak Nong
Many farmers and cooperatives in Dak Nong have focused on processing high-quality coffee for export.

These projects focus on sustainable landscape management, forest protection, and improving coffee productivity and quality. International cooperation has facilitated the province’s compliance with EUDR regulations.

The Department of Agriculture assessed that the results achieved in coffee production so far have helped the locality comply with EUDR regulations, opening up sustainable development opportunities for the province's coffee export industry.

EUDR has 4 main groups of requirements for localities and producers including: having data on coordinates (GPS) and boundaries for each coffee plot/garden; establishing a data information system of coffee plots/garden to serve as a basis for product traceability combined with support for supply chain connectivity; establishing a monitoring system for reporting and feedback on product traceability and forest protection related to coffee production and logging; having a reporting, information and feedback mechanism when requested by the importing country.

Mr. Pham Quang Trung, Chief Representative of the Global Coffee Forum in Vietnam, said that to meet the EUDR principles, it is necessary to coordinate with relevant parties in building a database including coordinates and maps of large plots.

This is the most important content in the dossier when exporting coffee to the EU. In addition, it is necessary to communicate and raise awareness so that producers comply with the principles of EUDR.
