Summer never stops
Immediately after the school year ended, Ms. Nguyen Thi Sam from Bac Giang ward contacted tutoring centers to register her child for three subjects: Math, Literature, and English. In addition to in-person classes, she also purchased several online learning packages to provide extra tutoring and boost her daughter's confidence in preparing for exams. Because her daughter is entering 9th grade this year, Ms. Sam is very worried, as in recent years, Bac Ninh province has only admitted about 60% of students to public high schools. The rest attend private schools or continuing education programs at the high school level.

During this time, many students and parents, mainly in urban areas, are scrambling to find extra classes. Many parents are worried, even starting from elementary school, by enrolling their children in extra classes to prepare them for the aptitude tests for admission to prestigious middle schools. Some even enroll children preparing for first grade in pre-elementary classes to learn to read and write, fearing that their peers will learn to read and write before them.
| Excessive summer tutoring inadvertently "steals" childhood and opportunities for children to experience and explore the world around them. Parents shouldn't think that learning from textbooks is only for achieving high grades and passing exams; what's important is that children also learn from life. |
The summer break is gradually becoming a "third semester," with parents enrolling their children in review and enrichment classes very early on. As a result, many students have to maintain a nearly full week of classes, no different from the school year, with significantly reduced rest time.
Nguyen Tuan Minh, from Lien Bao commune, shared: "I also want to have a summer break, but many of my friends are attending extra classes to prepare for the 10th grade entrance exam, so I'm worried. If my friends are studying and I'm not, will I be able to pass the high school entrance exam?"
Taking advantage of the psychology of parents and students, many tutoring centers and businesses offer summer courses. These centers publicly list tuition fees ranging from 60,000 to 100,000 VND per session. Some localities have a high concentration of tutoring businesses, such as Kinh Bac Ward, Bac Giang Ward, Vo Cuong Ward, Tu Son Ward, Que Vo Ward, Viet Yen Ward, Vu Ninh Ward, and Hiep Hoa Commune…
Although the Ministry of Education prohibits the organization of extra classes in academic subjects for primary school students and forbids teachers from tutoring their own students, currently, some teachers are "circumventing the law" by tutoring primary school students in Math and Vietnamese, and even tutoring their own students at centers under the guise of organizing life skills classes, calligraphy classes, etc.

Too much extra tutoring during the summer unintentionally "steals" away children's childhood and opportunities to experience and explore the world around them.
According to experts, parents shouldn't think that their children should only focus on learning from textbooks to achieve high grades and pass exams; it's also crucial that children learn from life. Instead of creating a packed study schedule, parents should work alongside their children to choose goals that suit their abilities, interests, and age-appropriate psychology.

Developing self-learning abilities is a sustainable foundation for students' long-term development. After a stressful school year, what students need is not just a series of classes, but also a proper break to recharge their energy, nurture their interest in learning, and grow from life experiences.
Parents shouldn't set too high expectations, as this can detract from the enjoyment and meaning of summer for their children. The important thing is to equip them with essential life skills and teach them how to protect themselves from the influences of their surroundings.
Mr. Ta Viet Hung, Director of the Department of Education and Training, said: “In order for extracurricular teaching and learning activities during the summer to be carried out in accordance with Circular No. 19/2026/TT-BGDĐT amending and supplementing some articles of Circular No. 29/2024/TT-BGDĐT dated December 30, 2024 of the Minister of Education and Training, the Department of Education and Training requires schools to review and keep track of the number of teachers registered with the principal to participate in extracurricular teaching outside the school.”
The school principal is responsible for managing and supervising extracurricular tutoring activities; promptly detecting and handling violations of professional ethics; and receiving and resolving complaints from parents and students within their authority. The Department of Education and Training and the People's Committees of communes and wards have established hotlines to receive feedback from the public, parents, and students regarding extracurricular tutoring activities in their areas, and to promptly handle tutoring activities that do not comply with regulations.
To alleviate the pressure of extra tutoring, many believe that the education sector needs to continue innovating the content, curriculum, and teaching methods, prioritizing the development of students' competencies and qualities, reforming the form of testing and exam design to focus on what students learn, avoiding overly difficult questions, preventing exam pressure, and overcoming the problem of excessive focus on achievements in education.
