At the recent Google I/O 2026 developer conference, Google officially announced a landmark upgrade package for the Android operating system in the automotive space, aiming to improve the display interface for both the Android Auto platform and the deeply integrated Google built-in system.
New design, compatible with all screens.
The most noticeable change in the new generation of Android Auto is its ability to automatically optimize the display aspect ratio to fit any physical screen size on modern vehicles.
Whether the car has an ultra-long rectangular screen, a round screen, or distinctive geometric shapes like those found in BMW's new generation Neue Klasse models, the Android Auto interface can automatically fill in the dead spaces to create a seamless display area.
Google has also officially brought its Material 3 Expressive design language to the cockpit, offering expressive fonts, smooth animation effects, and a rich collection of dynamic wallpapers.

Another major improvement is the introduction of customizable, miniature utility widgets, allowing users to proactively arrange shortcuts such as favorite contacts, automatic garage door opener, or weather update panel right at their fingertips for quick access even when the navigation map is running in full screen.
New map, with added 3D navigation features.
The Google Maps app received a major update with the Immersive Navigation feature. This feature recreates the travel route in a vivid 3D space, simulating in detail the buildings, bridges, and undulating terrain of the surrounding environment.
Safe driving information such as lane maps, traffic light systems, and stop signs are also visually highlighted to help drivers make accurate decisions at complex intersections.
For entertainment purposes, Android Auto adds the ability to stream Full HD video at 60 fps (frames per second) through popular apps like YouTube.

This feature will be rolled out later this year on compatible vehicles from a range of major brands including BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Skoda, Tata, and Volvo.
To ensure traffic safety, the video viewing feature is only activated when the vehicle is in park (P) gear. When the driver switches to driving mode, the system automatically converts the video into a background audio stream on supported applications, allowing users to continue listening to content without interruption.
The auditory experience is also significantly enhanced with Dolby Atmos surround sound technology deeply integrated into music apps like YouTube Music and Spotify.
AI is being applied.
Leveraging the wave of artificial intelligence, Google's automotive platform now deeply integrates the intelligent Gemini AI model, replacing the previous rigid command-line system with the ability to understand natural context.
If a user receives a message from a friend asking for an address, Gemini can automatically understand the context of the question, retrieve information from previous interaction history to find the exact address, and suggest an answer with just one tap.
Users can also execute continuous commands in a natural conversational style to search for suitable restaurants along their route, check restaurant spaces, or order takeout food while driving home.

For vehicles using Google's built-in system, users will have access to a richer library of downloadable apps, including the Zoom video conferencing application. Because it integrates deeply into the vehicle's hardware system, drivers can directly ask Google about vehicle operation features or request calculations to determine if a specific cargo container will fit in the trunk.
In particular, the built-in 3D navigation feature on the Google system will achieve optimal accuracy thanks to live lane guidance technology that uses the car's front-facing camera to precisely determine the lane the vehicle is traveling in in real time.
