The US government has just granted preliminary permission to Poland to establish a production line for Patriot air defense missiles at facilities within its defense industrial complex. This move marks the localization of production of advanced interceptor weapons in a strategic location near Ukraine.

Polish Deputy Minister of Defence Cezary Tomczyk confirmed this information on TVN24 television channel following a Polish delegation's visit to the United States. He stated that although Washington was initially hesitant, negotiations had led to an agreement on forming an alliance to implement the PAC-3 interceptor missile production project in Poland.
Addressing the global shortage of interceptor missiles.
This collaboration is driven by two main factors: Poland's own defense needs and the global shortage of Patriot ammunition. Currently, the US and its allies are consuming large quantities of this type of ammunition in military operations in the Middle East, putting pressure on existing stockpiles.
Poland is a major customer for Patriot systems. In 2018, under the Wisła program, the country spent $4.75 billion on two upgraded Patriot systems and 208 PAC-3 MSE missiles. By 2023, Warsaw had signed a further $15 billion contract to purchase six more upgraded systems, 12 LTAMDS radars, and 644 PAC-3 MSE missiles.
The goal is to increase production capacity to 2,000 missiles per year.
The US is striving to more than triple its MSE missile production, aiming for 2,000 missiles per year within the next seven years. Compared to the 620 missiles produced last year and the target of 750 for next year, this is a significant challenge, prompting the US to expand its supply chain to partners such as Poland.
In fact, Poland has been involved in the production of several components for this system. The Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze No.1 (WZL 1) plant produced the first batch of PAC-3 MSE launch tubes. Meanwhile, the assembly of Patriot launchers has also begun at Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW) under an agreement with Raytheon Technologies.
Poland's authorization to fully manufacture interceptor missiles not only secures a supply for Warsaw but also contributes to increasing NATO's overall production capacity in the current complex geopolitical landscape.
