Britain and Poland strengthen defense and security coordination.

The British government announced that it and Poland will sign a new defense and security treaty on May 28th to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the face of growing security challenges in Europe.

According to a London announcement, the agreement is expected to be signed when Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk meets with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London. The treaty will focus on strengthening border security, combating organized crime, expanding defense cooperation, and promoting coordination between the UK and the European Union (EU). The two sides are also expected to discuss emerging security threats, including cyberattacks, espionage, and other forms of “hybrid threats” in Europe. The British government believes there has been a significant increase in recent incidents involving sabotage, cyberattacks, and influence campaigns targeting European countries.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Prime Minister Keir Starmer stressed that current security challenges require the UK and Poland to build a closer partnership. He said the new treaty would mark the biggest step forward in defense and security cooperation between the two countries in decades, enabling a more effective response to modern threats.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the signing of the treaty as a “historic moment” for bilateral relations. He said that, in addition to defense, cybersecurity would be a central focus of the agreement, given Poland’s claims that it is becoming a target of cyberattacks, espionage, and disinformation related to the conflict in Ukraine.

Regarding defense cooperation, the British government stated that the two countries will promote coordination in the defense industry, develop modern weapons systems, including advanced munitions and the capability to jointly produce medium-range anti-aircraft missiles.

The treaty with Poland is seen as part of Britain's efforts to strengthen security ties with European partners, following similar agreements signed by London with France and Germany.
