Ms. Vu Thi Tuy is one of the exemplary women in the Dam Rong region.

That is Ms. Vu Thi Tuy - Director of Duy Phuong Silk and Mulberry Company Limited, a pioneer in bringing silkworm farming to this region still facing many difficulties.

Having lived for many years in the former Bao Loc City, Ms. Vu Thi Tuy once owned a small, handcrafted silk reeling business. However, limited financial resources and a strong desire to improve her life prompted her to make a bold decision: In 2005, she left Bao Loc and moved to Dam Rong – a then-poor, sparsely populated district with difficult transportation. “I realized that this area had a favorable climate and fertile land, very suitable for growing mulberry trees and raising silkworms. I boldly borrowed credit, initially 5 million dong, then 10 million dong, to start building a silkworm rearing model. I also encouraged 11 other households in the area to follow suit, creating a community that developed a new profession in this still struggling region,” Ms. Tuy explained.

From small beginnings, with determination and vision, in 2022, Ms. Vu Thi Tuy officially launched the Duy Phuong Silk Rearing Factory - the largest facility in the Dam Rong region, covering 2,400 m2 with a total investment of up to 21 billion VND.

Besides creating livelihoods, Ms. Tuy also focuses on vocational training for workers. During the 10-20 day apprenticeship period, workers receive food allowances and systematic vocational training to ensure long-term employment. As a result, many women from ethnic minority groups such as the M'Nong, H'Mong, and Tay have found stable jobs with an average income of 9 million VND per month, a dream figure for many farming households in the area.

Ms. Vu Thi Tuy said: "To ensure the company operates efficiently and gradually builds a closed production chain, the unit has invested over 14 billion VND to complete items such as cold storage, generators, and modern machinery and equipment."

Not stopping there, in early 2025, Ms. Tuy continued to invest 4 billion VND to import silkworm incubation machines, ensuring high-quality silkworm breeds. At the same time, she maintained and contracted with local people to expand the raw material area to over 14 hectares of mulberry trees to stabilize production.

After 3 years of operation, the Duy Phuong Silk Rearing Factory now operates at a capacity of 2 tons of cocoons per day, producing 7-8 tons of silk per month, creating jobs for 65 workers, including 50 women from the local area and surrounding regions.

Besides providing income, Duy Phuong Silk Company also opens job opportunities for poor students and young people, allowing them to earn extra income to help their families and cover tuition fees. Ms. Dao Thi Thanh Vuong, a H'Mong ethnic minority woman from Hamlet 8, Quang Hoa Commune, shared: “My family has 1 hectare of coffee plantation; my husband takes care of the farm, while I come to the company to learn the trade. Initially, I was a little hesitant, but the work is easy, and I will try my best to master the skills.” Ms. Vo Thi Thu Hien from Phi Co Hamlet, Dam Rong 3 Commune, said: “I’ve been working for a month now, and my skills are quite solid. I just received my first monthly salary, so I’m very excited.”

Ms. Vu Thi Tuy is not only a businesswoman and a "woman of silkworms," but also a symbol of willpower, faith, and perseverance; a source of inspiration and hope for the entire farming community to rise from a land still facing many difficulties. Starting from nothing in a barren land, Ms. Tuy has now written a success story, inspiring those who want to start businesses in agriculture, and affirming the important role of women in economic development in rural areas, contributing to the transformation of the agricultural structure, increasing income, and socio-economic development in the locality.
