Tea-growing areas in Ha Tinh province are entering a peak period of care and drought prevention ahead of prolonged hot weather. (In the photo: Tea-growing areas in Son Kim 2 and Son Tay communes).
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Lam (Son Kim 2 commune) is taking advantage of the opportunity to repair the pipeline system and extend additional tarpaulin pipes to ensure a reliable water supply for his tea plants during the hot season. Ensuring a timely water supply helps the tea plants maintain moisture, preventing leaf burn and wilting when outdoor temperatures rise.
In addition to easily movable tarpaulin pipes, many households have also invested in PVC pipe systems and installed additional sprinkler nozzles on their tea hills to ensure a long-term water supply. Although the initial investment cost is quite high, this system is highly durable, helps distribute water evenly, saves labor, and improves drought mitigation during the hot season. The water jets from the sprinkler system distribute the water evenly, helping the plants maintain moisture in hot, dry weather conditions.
The electricity system, invested in right in the tea-growing areas, makes it easier for people to operate pumps, proactively manage irrigation water during the hot season, and helps keep the plants healthy and ensures a good harvest.
Officials from the Tay Son Tea Enterprise are guiding local people on measures to care for and protect tea plants from drought during the hot season. In addition to watering and weeding, people are also advised to apply fertilizer appropriately and increase nutrients to help tea plants recover and grow well in prolonged hot and dry weather conditions. Son Kim 2 commune currently has approximately 350 hectares of industrial tea plantations. Facing the risk of prolonged heatwaves, the local authorities have intensified efforts to raise awareness and guide residents on proactively securing irrigation water, implementing moisture retention measures, and providing appropriate plant care to minimize damage to the tea plantations. To proactively secure irrigation water during the hot season, many tea-growing households in Ky Thuong commune have extended hoses and installed water pipelines up steep tea hills to promptly replenish moisture for the plants, limiting the risk of drought affecting growth and yield.
Ms. Ho Thi Luy from Ky Thuong commune said: "Right from the beginning of the hot season, my family proactively bought straw to cover the base of the tea plants to retain soil moisture, while also maintaining regular watering in the early morning and late afternoon. Covering the base with straw not only helps reduce water evaporation but also keeps the soil loose and porous, creating conditions for the tea plants to develop stably in harsh weather conditions."
Currently, Ky Thuong commune has about 90 hectares of tea plantations. To ensure a reliable water supply for irrigation during the dry season, many households have invested in drilling wells and digging ponds to store water in areas far from rivers and streams, while also utilizing water from natural streams and springs to pump water up to the tea hills to combat drought.
People are taking advantage of the opportunity to weed and clean the tea rows to help aerate the soil, reduce nutrient competition, and retain moisture for the plants during the hot season.
Many households with the means to invest in machinery have used lawn mowers to clear and remove weeds around the tea plants, contributing to reduced labor and improved efficiency in tea plant care. Ha Tinh province currently has a total tea cultivation area of over 1,225 hectares, of which approximately 1,177 hectares are for production. Thanks to proper cultivation techniques, many tea plantations are developing steadily, ensuring productivity and product quality. In the future, Ha Tinh will continue to orient its tea cultivation towards concentrated and sustainable development, strengthening the application of science and technology and improving product quality through processing and brand building.
