A delightful experience with pottery.
During his three-week vacation in Mui Ne, Adam Sandler, a tourist from the US, stumbled upon a pottery workshop on social media. He contacted the organizers and invited a few friends to Moon Art - Phan Thiet Painting and Pottery Workshop (Ham Thang Ward) to experience it. For over three hours, Adam and his friends meticulously worked through various stages, from compressing the clay and placing it on a potter's wheel to shaping and decorating the finished product. “This was my first time experiencing this, so it was very interesting. Whether the products were clumsy or sophisticated, each item tells its own story, helping to cultivate patience and spark creativity,” Adam shared. After shaping cups, plates, and bowls from clay according to their liking, participants paint and decorate them before firing and glazing. The completion time typically takes about 15-20 days.
Although Moon Art has only been operating in the Phan Thiet area for over 3 years, it has gradually become a familiar meeting place for young people who want to try their hand at handicrafts and unleash their creativity with their skillful hands. Ms. Luong Thi Thanh, owner of the Moon Art Painting and Pottery Workshop, said: “The pottery workshops not only bring creative joy but also help people create meaningful gifts with their own unique touches to give to family and friends. In particular, the pottery-making space helps visitors understand more about traditional pottery making – one of the cultural heritages that has been associated with the Vietnamese people for hundreds of years.”
Recently, not only Moon Art has attracted many tourists to participate in pottery making and painting, but several cafes in the Phan Thiet area are also implementing this model on weekends, such as Mo Hoang, Hoa Dat Phan, and Ap Art Coffee… This aims to create an attractive playground for young people and to bring traditional pottery closer to the community.
Preserving the cultural values of traditional crafts.
Nestled quietly in a garden on Nguyen Hoi Street (Binh Thuan Ward), Ap Art Coffee is a space where young people can freely create, experiment, and unleash their creativity using any material they desire. On weekends, Ap Art Coffee is quite lively and bustling, mostly with young people coming to "try their hand." Besides helping people relieve stress, the workshops at the cafe also create meaningful gifts for loved ones, such as: embroidered paintings, statue painting, scented candle making, pottery making, painting, etc. Ngoc Nhi, who assists and guides customers in workshops at the cafe, said: "At Ap Art Coffee, we aim for a comfortable, friendly, and connected creative environment. Making a complete pottery product takes 3-4 hours, a time when many young people can fully concentrate on molding clay, shaping, exploring themselves, and expressing their emotions freely and safely."
Most of the owners of these cafes and pottery workshops are very young, and they undoubtedly have a special passion for art, including a love for pottery. The revival of handcrafted pottery is not simply a trend, but also reflects a sustainable consumer trend and a search for products with high artistic value.
"Those involved in the service industry aspire to bring the art of pottery closer to young people, harmoniously combining tradition and modernity to create unique products. Through this, they contribute to preserving and developing the pottery craft, helping the younger generation understand the cultural value of this traditional craft in a sustainable way," Ms. Thanh further shared.
