A keen sense of economic development

After many years working at sea, realizing his health was no longer what it used to be, Mr. Do Ba Thu from Cam Hong commune decided to quit fishing. Wishing to find a suitable job to transition to a different profession, Mr. Thu researched and chose the model of commercial frog farming to develop his economy.

“Previously, my brother-in-law from the same village had a frog farming model. Seeing that the model yielded high economic efficiency, I went to learn from his experience. After thoroughly researching the farming methods, I boldly invested 28 million VND to renovate an old pig pen into a frog farm. On a cement floor, I invested in tarpaulin and a water supply system for farming,” said Mr. Do Ba Thu.

According to Mr. Thu, the commercial frog farming model requires relatively low initial investment but yields high profits. In 2025, he conducted two trial farming cycles, each lasting about two and a half months. After the first two successful cycles, he boldly expanded his model by adding three more ponds from his three existing ponds.

“Raising frogs for commercial purposes is quite simple in terms of process and technique, requiring little space. The output is also guaranteed by businesses that purchase the frogs directly from the farm. Therefore, with good care, each farming cycle can yield a profit of 60 million VND. On average, with 4 cycles per year, the profit reaches approximately 240-250 million VND/year. Besides providing a decent income, this model also creates jobs for family members,” Mr. Do Ba Thu shared.

Mr. Thu's commercial frog farming model is just one of hundreds of successful production and business models generating substantial income in Cam Hong commune and other localities throughout the province. These successful models have helped farmers gradually increase their income and create stable jobs for many local workers. This is one of the important criteria for building new rural areas today.

According to the New Rural Development Criteria for the period 2026-2030, the general standard for the three groups of communes stipulates that the percentage of households with excellent production and business practices must be equal to or greater than 40%. Therefore, the emergence of these exemplary production and business models has helped to raise the local income criteria; contributing to consolidating and improving the criteria for building new rural areas.

The main force in implementing the movement.

Following the provincial merger, Quang Tri has 77 Farmers' Associations at the commune and ward levels, with over 239,000 members. This is considered one of the core forces in socio-economic development and the construction of new rural areas in the locality.

Mr. Tran Tien Sy, Chairman of the Provincial Farmers' Association, said: In implementing the nationwide movement to build new rural areas, in recent times, farmers' associations at all levels in the province have promoted the movement "Farmers competing in excellent production and business, uniting to help each other get rich and sustainably reduce poverty." This movement has produced many successful farming households. Many farming households have large-scale production, earning hundreds of millions of dong in profit annually, even reaching billions of dong. These successful farming members not only enrich their families but also create jobs for many local laborers.

To support farmer members in their economic activities, in recent times, the various levels of the association have coordinated with departments, agencies, and businesses to organize training courses to improve skills and knowledge in production and business organization. They have guided members in accessing smart agricultural production, applying biotechnology, and producing organically and circularly to improve the quality of agricultural products, ensure food safety and hygiene, and increase their value.

In addition, the various levels of the association focus on disseminating information and mobilizing farmers to build effective production and business models, concentrating on shifting the structure of crops and livestock, and applying science and technology to production. They also develop farm and household farm models, cooperative economic models, and land consolidation to create concentrated commodity production areas linked to processing and product consumption.

It can be said that, in the journey of building new rural areas, farmers are not only beneficiaries but also pioneers and core forces in building sustainable criteria. With their contributions to economic development and income improvement, farmer association members have been and are creating an increasingly vibrant and modern appearance for new rural areas.
