Hanoi moves up in the list of most livable cities.

The international human resource management consulting firm ECA International has released its annual ranking of the most livable cities. According to the ranking, Singapore continues to top the list of most livable cities for expats. This marks the 10th consecutive year that Singapore has held the top spot in ECA's ranking of livable cities.

Meanwhile, Tokyo and Osaka in Japan ranked 2nd and 5th respectively. Mark Harrison, ECA's Asia Regional Director, stated that with good facilities and infrastructure, low crime rates, and minimal socio-political tensions, Singapore remains a very attractive destination for expats. However, the gap between Singapore and other locations has narrowed. The annual ECA's livable cities ranking objectively assesses the overall quality of life for expats in over 500 locations worldwide. The ranking is based on numerous factors related to quality of life, including healthcare, housing, amenities, social networks, entertainment, infrastructure, climate, personal safety, socio-political environment, and air quality. In Southeast Asia, improvements in infrastructure, transportation, healthcare, and entertainment facilities have made many cities more attractive to expats. Accordingly, the capital city of Hanoi   Vietnam's city rose 16 places from 160th in 2023 to 144th, Jakarta (Indonesia) climbed 17 places from 10 years ago to 196th, and Phnom Penh (Cambodia) rose 16 places to 184th. Chinese cities have made significant strides in the rankings over the past 10 years, although they have lost some momentum due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While some issues continue to challenge expats, including high pollution levels and healthcare facilities, improvements in areas such as transportation infrastructure and international schools are contributing to the cities' rise in rankings. Specifically, Shenzhen ranked 137th, up 15 places compared to 10 years ago; Xi'an ranked 163rd, up 13 places; and Hong Kong (China) ranked 77th, up 15 places compared to 2023.
