On December 28th, the authorities of Bac Gianh ward ( Quang Tri province) confirmed that they are verifying the identities of the father and son who jumped into the canal to rescue three people in distress during a cold, rainy night in the area, in order to commend them.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 PM on December 25th. At that time, Ms. Hoang Thi Th. was riding a motorbike with her daughter and her daughter's classmate across Gia Hy Bridge in Bac Gianh Ward when they unfortunately had an accident. All three fell into the canal in the cold, rainy night.
At the same time, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Vien and his son, Nguyen Van Ngoc (residing in Minh Phuong residential area, Bac Gianh ward), were on their way home from his maternal grandparents' house. In the darkness of the night, Ngoc suddenly noticed something unusual in the canal, suspecting someone had met with an accident.
Upon spotting three people struggling in the water, Mr. Vien and his son immediately stopped their car and jumped into the canal to rescue them.
Mr. Vien recounted that approaching the three people was very difficult due to heavy rain and darkness. When they managed to pull the three people close to the bank, they couldn't get them ashore because the canal's embankment was built with concrete, almost vertically and very high.
After a struggle, Mr. Vien and his son finally managed to get all three people to the edge of the canal.
At this time, another resident, Mr. Ngo Ba Van (residing in Tien Phong residential area, Ba Don ward), also discovered the incident and came to assist, helping to bring the three victims ashore.
"When you see someone in trouble, you have to help them; there's no time to think about anything else," Mr. Vien said.
The victims' family said that all three have now been checked for injuries. Fortunately, none of them sustained serious injuries. However, due to the dangerous situation, all three are still frightened.
"When they fell into the canal, all three were still wearing raincoats, so they were completely submerged in the water. The situation would have been extremely dangerous if they hadn't been rescued in time. My family is truly grateful to Mr. Vien and his son, Mr. Van," said Mrs. Th.'s husband.
