According to the Korea Times, the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education (South Korea) is facing a wave of harsh criticism after promoting its AI learning platform with a video depicting teachers as "incompetent" compared to artificial intelligence (AI).

Video goes viral

A two-minute video, posted on social media on November 14th, introduces a pilot Hi-Learning system designed for "future-oriented education." The system's AI can grade student assignments in Korean language, social sciences , and natural sciences.

In the video, the scene of the teacher being confused and unable to answer the student's question is replaced by the AI "Hi-Learning," which provides a quick and detailed explanation. When the student requests more information, the teacher helplessly watches the AI handle the situation.

In another scene, when the teacher reassures the students, "If you work hard, you will get good results," the AI interrupts, asserting, "Those words are empty. Your eyes are trembling and your voice lacks sincerity," leaving the teacher flustered.

Immediately after the video went viral, hundreds of internet users, including many teachers, reacted strongly, claiming that the video was insulting to the teaching profession.

One teacher commented: "Humans have core values that need to be cultivated. AI lacks these core values; its content is empty and meaningless."

Teachers' unions also condemned the video as disrespectful and harmful to the teaching profession. The Gyeonggi branch of the Korean Federation of Teachers and Education Workers (KTU) called the video "a mockery that insults the professionalism of teachers."

They demanded that Education Director Yim Tae Hee halt the implementation of the AI-based assessment system. Shortly afterward, Mr. Yim issued a formal apology.

Opportunity or challenge?

According to the Korea Times, many South Korean education experts believe this incident reflects deeper concerns about the growing role of AI in education.

Many fear that, if not carefully managed, the integration of AI could change not only the responsibilities of teachers but also the relationship between teachers and students.

Ms. Kim, a high school English teacher in Goyang, commented, "These days, it's safe to say that almost every student uses AI. I think all students will use tools like ChatGPT when doing homework."

Therefore, teaching students how to use this tool safely and effectively has become part of my role… I think it’s important to find ways for AI to benefit students, because, like the internet before it, AI isn’t going away."

Ms. Heo Won Hee, a teacher and member of KTU, emphasized: "The role of a teacher is no longer just to impart knowledge. It is important to build new relationships, foster engagement, development, and mutual understanding with modern students."

As AI spreads throughout the South Korean education system, experts like Professor Moon Hyung Nam, president of the Korean AI Education Association, emphasize that direct support from teachers has never been more important.

Moon stated, "I think the biggest problem with AI is 'illusion' (creating or distorting information), and this is not easy to overcome."

Although AI can perform many tasks quickly and efficiently, it often generates misinformation. Therefore, I believe experienced teachers must supervise and guide AI in the classroom, providing essential assessments that only humans can make."
