Son Doong Cave (Quang Binh) has been voted among the world's "surreal" destinations, making visitors feel like they've "landed on another planet".
In late March, the British travel magazine Wanderlust ranked Son Doong Cave in Vietnam among the 9 most "surreal" destinations in the world. According to the magazine, if travelers have a dream of exploring space but haven't been able to fulfill it, these surreal destinations will satisfy it.
"It's hard to imagine the sheer size of Son Doong, the world's largest cave. With a length of nearly 9 km and a wide ceiling, Son Doong could fit an entire New York City neighborhood inside with plenty of room to spare," the magazine wrote. Some of the world's tallest stalactites, over 80 meters high, are found here. The cave also has numerous underground rivers.
Visitors wishing to explore the cave must register for a tour. Currently, Son Doong tours are limited in number to ensure minimal negative impact on the environment, so bookings must be made a year in advance.
Not only is Son Doong Cave a paradise for adventure enthusiasts, it also serves as the setting for music videos. Alone, Part II by Alan Walker, the film series Planet Earth from the BBC and many other popular television programs.
Son Doong was discovered by Ho Khanh, a forest worker from Phong Nha, Quang Binh The cave's entrance was discovered in 1990. It was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's largest natural cave in 2013 and again as the world's largest by volume in 2015. To commemorate the day Son Doong was declared the world's largest cave in 2022, it was honored by Google Doodle on its homepage in 18 countries worldwide.
The world destinations included in the list are Vatnajökull National Park (Iceland), Lencois Maranhenses National Park (Brazil), Socotra (Yemen), Namibia, White Sands National Park in New Mexico (USA), Puna de Atacama Desert (Argentina), Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park (Madagascar), and Salar de Uyuni Salt Flats (Bolivia).
