The new 2026 Buick Electra E7 PHEV has been officially revealed in a legal filing with impressive specifications, including a combined range of up to 1,609 km. A few years ago, GM confidently stated that they would surpass Tesla "by the middle of this decade." Their Ultium platform is lauded as the most advanced in the automotive industry. In a way, that's true, if we consider the 800-volt architecture and the separate battery compartment setup that allows it to charge seamlessly on both 400-volt and 800-volt chargers. However, this didn't help GM much, and 2025 brought the opposite of "overtaking Tesla".
Recently, GM detailed the significant financial losses it is incurring in its electric vehicle business in the US, estimated at around $7.6 billion in the second half of 2025. Worse still, GM expects to face further costs as it cancels contracts with suppliers to downsize its electric vehicle operations. However, GM performs much better in other markets, particularly China, where its joint ventures are becoming profitable. The Buick brand, which currently has no electric vehicles in its product line in the US, is the spearhead of GM's operations in China, and its Electra models have proven quite successful.
The Buick Electra E5, launched in 2022, was one of the first electric vehicles to utilize Ultium technology, followed shortly after by the Electra E4. Unfortunately, GM never considered bringing Electra electric models to the US market. In mid-2025, GM decided to restructure its operations in China and spin off Electra as a Buick sub-brand specializing in new energy vehicles.
That is, vehicles using either purely electric or plug-in hybrid powertrains. This coincides with Buick's announcement of an upgraded version of the Electra E5, as well as two new models based on a new architecture specifically for the Chinese market called Xiao Yao. The first model based on the new architecture is the Electra L7 luxury sedan, which recently won first place unexpectedly in an autonomous driving competition. The second model is yet to be named, but Buick says it will be an SUV launching in the first quarter of 2026. Thanks to a legal filing, we now know that this model will be named the Electra E7 and will be the first plug-in hybrid model sold under the Electra sub-brand. This 5-seater SUV measures 4.85 meters in length, placing it between the Tesla Model Y and the 7-seater Model YL. According to MIIT filings, there are three versions of the Electra E7, all of which are PHEVs. The gasoline engine is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder, producing 115 kW (154 hp).
The electric motor adds 165 kW (221 hp), bringing the total output to 252 kW (338 hp). The capacity of the LFP battery pack has not been announced, but we know that it will provide an all-electric range of up to 210 km. However, with the support of a petrol engine, the Electra E7 promises a range of over 1,600 km. But consider this figure with caution, as the estimates are based on the Chinese CLTC standard.
