According to ESPN , Inter Miami CF and Lionel Messi are in talks to extend his current contract, which expires after the 2025 MLS season. The move is believed to be an effort to keep the 8-time Ballon d'Or winner in the United States longer, despite recent speculation about his possible return to play in Europe or South America.
Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas has made it clear that he wants to extend Messi's presence at the club. Mas is particularly hopeful that Messi will be the one to inaugurate the new Miami Freedom Park stadium in March 2026.
“We want Messi to finish his career here. He is an icon, and we will do everything to make him feel at home,” Mr. Mas shared with cautious optimism.

However, Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano said he was not involved in the negotiations. “I am focused on my game and the game. Messi is still playing at a high level and is an important part of our strategy,” he said.
Messi signed a two-and-a-half-year “Designated Player” contract in July 2023. Since joining Inter Miami, Leo has had a huge impact both on and off the pitch, helping the club win its first title in history (the League Cup) in 2023, then the Super Cup and most recently, a berth in the 2025 Club World Cup thanks to its success in MLS.
In 38 regular season games in MLS, Messi scored 31 goals and contributed 22 assists, an impressive performance that helped him win the MVP title of the tournament in 2024. In addition, Messi also scored 7 more goals and 2 assists in the Concacaf Champions Cup in two consecutive seasons.
After a 4-0 defeat to PSG in the Club World Cup round of 16, Inter Miami are looking ahead to the remainder of the MLS season with the goal of winning more trophies and continuing to build their position. The upcoming match against CF Montreal will be an opportunity for Messi and his teammates to prove that they are ready to come back stronger.
