The brothers' kind gesture
For the common good, two Bru-Van Kieu brothers, Ho Van Dinh and Ho Van Sang, from Vinh O commune, Vinh Linh district ( Quang Tri province ), discussed and decided to donate land to build a road.
Belonging to the poor and near-poor households, land is the most valuable asset of the Ho Van Dinh and Ho Van Sang families. However, when Vinh O commune decided to build roads for residents and agricultural production, Ho Van Dinh (born in 1984, residing in Hamlet 4) and his younger brother Ho Van Sang (born in 1993, residing in Hamlet 3) voluntarily donated their land to facilitate the road construction.
The story began in 2022, when Vinh Linh district allocated nearly 600 million VND from the National Target Program for Socio -Economic Development in Ethnic Minority Areas, Phase I (2021-2025) (National Target Program 1719) to Vinh O commune to plan and construct an internal village road connecting the Vinh O Kindergarten in Hamlet 4, passing through the residential area, with a length of 500m and a width of 4m.
During the land clearance process, Mr. Dinh's household was most affected, as the road passed through nearly one-third of his family's land. In particular, Mr. Dinh was preparing to build a sturdy house on this land to replace the dilapidated house where his family had lived for many years. When the Party Committee and the Vinh O commune government explained and persuaded him of the necessity of opening the road, he was hesitant, but ultimately decided to donate the land for the road to be opened.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Ho Van Dinh said: "Land is a valuable asset, but after being explained the importance of opening the road, and for the common good, my family agreed to donate the land to make way for the road."
Mr. Dinh further explained that if they didn't agree to hand over the land, the commune wouldn't be able to construct the road. The villagers and children in this area would have to endure the hardship of taking a detour to reach the main road for work and school. Thinking this way, he discussed it with his family and decided to donate nearly 500 square meters of land for the road construction.
After donating the land, the remaining land belonging to Mr. Dinh's family became narrower and lower than the road level. Mr. Dinh calculated and built an additional foundation to construct a small house for his family. Thanks to Mr. Dinh's selfless act, the internal village road project in Hamlet 4 was completed in time for the Lunar New Year of the Rabbit in 2023.
Also in 2022, Vinh O commune invested 562 million VND from the National Target Program 1719 to build a road to the production area between Hamlet 3 and Hamlet 4. The difficulty for Vinh O commune was that the project lacked allocated funds for land acquisition. After the local authorities clearly explained the scale and funding of the project, Mr. Ho Van Sang (Mr. Dinh's younger brother) voluntarily donated 500 m2 of rice paddy land (producing two crops per year) to open the road to the production area. Previously, Mr. Ho Van Dinh had repeatedly discussed with his younger brother the possibility of sacrificing their family's personal interests to build the road for the benefit of the community.
Not only was Sang a model household that completed the land handover early, but as the Youth Union Secretary, he, along with the local authorities, actively went to persuade each household that was still hesitant or unconvinced. Thanks to his persistent persuasion, and seeing his family's exemplary donation of land right next to the main road, many households in Hamlet 3 and Hamlet 4 also supported the project, such as the households of Mr. Ho Van Thin, Mr. Ho Van Bon, Mr. Ho Van Loi, Mr. Ho Van Than, etc. As a result, in November 2022, the road to the production area between Hamlet 3 and Hamlet 4 was built and has now been completed and put into use, greatly facilitating the people's production process.
The selfless sacrifice of a disabled mother and daughter for the community.
Ms. Le Thi Lien (born in 1961), residing in Ward 8, Gio Linh town, Gio Linh district, has a disability in her hands, with a 61% disability rate. Her son has disabilities in both his hands and feet, making it very difficult for him to walk. To have a normal life like everyone else, the mother and son have worked much harder. Despite the many difficulties and hardships in their lives, they have repeatedly donated land to expand roads, contributing to the development of a civilized urban area.
In 2017, when Ward 8 launched a campaign to encourage residents to donate land for road construction and the development of a smart city, there were two roads passing through the area around Ms. Le Thi Lien's family property (one in front of her house, one on the side).
With the encouragement of the authorities, Ms. Lien and Mr. Trung agreed to donate land to widen both roads. Specifically, for the road in front of their house, they donated 28 meters of land, 1.5 meters wide. For the road on the side of their house, Ms. Lien donated 31 meters of land, 1.5 meters wide. In 2023, when they saw that the road in front, although widened, was still winding, the local authorities approached them, and without hesitation, Ms. Lien and her son donated another 0.7 meters of land to widen and straighten the neighborhood road.
Ms. Lien said that since donating land and widening the roads, her family and other residents no longer face slippery, muddy conditions whenever it rains. “Before, both roads passing by my house were dirt roads, very narrow, difficult for motorbikes to pass, and inaccessible to cars. In the dry season it was dusty, and in the rainy season it was slippery; my mother and I fell many times. Now, both roads are 5-6 meters wide, making travel convenient, and residents feel safer,” Ms. Lien said.
After Ms. Lien donated her land, associations and organizations in Ward 8 mobilized 20 neighboring households to contribute money and labor to buy materials and rebuild the fence for her family.
Mr. Hoang Hiep, Head of Ward 8, said: "Ms. Lien's family still faces many difficulties, but the local community always recognizes the spirit of community service shown by her and her children. This is a worthy example to be commended."
The National Target Program for Building New Rural Areas and Developing the Socio-Economic Conditions of Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Regions has been allocating significant resources to building infrastructure in these areas. During its implementation, many ethnic minority households and rural farming families have become shining examples of donating land for road construction. This is the most vivid manifestation of the consensus and unity of all segments of the population regarding the policies and guidelines that the Party and State have been implementing. It also serves as a major foundation for the successful implementation of the Party and State's policies and guidelines towards the goal of a "prosperous people and a strong nation."
