Spectators cheer on the Vietnamese Olympic team.
The Vietnamese Olympic team lost to the Iranian Olympic team 0-4 in the group stage of ASIAD 19 on the evening of September 21st. While coach Hoang Anh Tuan still seemed dissatisfied despite Vietnam's victory in the previous match, after the loss to Iran, he and the coaching staff shook hands and patted each player on the shoulder before going to stand B to thank the fans.
That's a very meaningful image, especially considering our young team (average age 20.6) just suffered a crushing defeat against a top-tier Asian opponent with two players over 30 and a core group of players born in 2000 (23 years old).
Mr. Tuan explained: "My coaching staff and I went to shake hands and encourage the whole team because that was the moment they needed us most. In this match, the opponent was superior to us in every aspect, from physique, physical condition, experience, age… everything."
Bui Wei Hao's missed opportunity
We know that there's a huge gap between Iranian and Vietnamese football. They're 22 places ahead of us in the FIFA rankings. Where are we? Still far behind them…”.
Despite the heavy defeat, coach Hoang Anh Tuan was not overly disappointed because he knew that his young players had tried their best against opponents who were not only a few years older but also had a lot of experience in top-level competition.
"But it is precisely because of these matches that the players will learn a great lesson: what top-level football is like, what modern football is like. I think this match is very beneficial."
Coach Hoang Anh Tuan did not blame his players after the heavy defeat.
Of course, nobody is happy about losing by such a large margin. But from a professional standpoint, the players have matured a great deal after this match.
"When they face a stronger opponent, they will know how to play. Through this match, they will understand what football is all about. They will understand that football is a science , not just a game as we often think," Coach Hoang Anh Tuan shared.
The Vietnamese Olympic team will have two days off before their final Group B match against Saudi Arabia at 7:30 PM Hangzhou (6:30 PM Vietnam time), also at Lingping Stadium. It is highly likely that two key players, Nham Manh Dung and Phan Tuan Tai, will be unavailable.
