Coach Dragan Talajic was unhappy with the Indonesian fans. |
"I am truly saddened that around 60,000 spectators in the stadium showed no respect for our country. I believe Indonesia can do better than this," Bola quoted coach Talajic as saying after the match, visibly disappointed.
The Bahrain national team captain wanted to highlight the booing and disrespectful behavior towards the visiting team from the home fans. At the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (Jakarta), the Bahrain team faced booing and jeering from the home crowd throughout the match.
Even hostile actions from Indonesian fans began as soon as the team bus arrived at the stadium. The organizers had to arrange two armored vehicles to escort the Bahrain team to Gelora Bung Karno.
As the match began, tens of thousands of spectators in the stadium repeatedly chanted the word "mafia" to attack the visiting team. This reaction stemmed from the 2-2 draw between the two teams in the first leg at Rifa, where Bahrain scored the equalizer thanks to controversial injury time decisions from the referee.
The Croatian strategist refused to blame his players after the 0-1 defeat, instead continuing to direct his criticism towards the Indonesian fans: “I can’t say anything negative about my players. They tried their best playing in unbelievable conditions. The fans were too noisy, there was too much booing. The players tried, but this time we couldn’t win.”
When asked whether the pressure from the crowd had affected the Bahrain players' morale, coach Talajic asserted: “No, it doesn’t affect the players’ mentality. The atmosphere here is very lively, and that’s good for football. But as I said, I don’t accept 60,000 people in the stadium showing disrespect to the symbol or the Kingdom of Bahrain. That’s wrong, even if everything else is fine.”
He also admitted his team hadn't performed as well as expected: "We're not happy with the performance. Bahrain could have done better. We regret not being able to show our full potential. However, in the remaining two matches of the group, we will continue to try to prove ourselves and aim for victory."
