Coach Shin Tae-yong demands a change to the AFF Cup format, saying Vietnam has the advantage.

“ The last time we beat Vietnam was in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Two days ago, after the match against Laos, we said that the AFF Cup should consider adjusting the schedule to improve the quality of the matches and raise the level of the tournament. With the current format, travel is very difficult for the teams.”

"The Vietnamese team has the advantage of a longer schedule, more rest time, and a more experienced squad, but we are aiming for the 2026 World Cup finals and youth tournaments next year ," coach Shin Tae-yong began the press conference before the match between Indonesia and Vietnam.

The South Korean coach asserted that Indonesia has a packed schedule at the ASEAN Cup 2024. First, the team played away in Myanmar, then returned home to host Laos, and is currently in Vietnam. He believes the Vietnamese team has an advantage because most of their players are key national team members with extensive international experience. Indonesia, on the other hand, has a diverse age range and mostly young players.

"The Indonesian team has a very difficult match tomorrow against host Vietnam, not only for the players but also for the coaching staff. The team is mainly made up of U20 players, so they lack international experience; however, this is an experience for them to improve and enhance their skills. We will try our best to achieve the best possible result," the coach added.

The Indonesian team's goal is to prepare for the 2025 U23 Asian Cup qualifiers, so Coach Shin hopes the young players will gain experience through big matches. The Indonesian team has a long journey ahead with three matches, and fans and experts alike hope the players will perform well against the Vietnamese team.

“ We don’t have our best squad, but we still have quality players, so we’ll do our best. Indonesia has some very good throw-ins, but we don’t know how many opportunities we’ll have to use that strength in the match. Our goal is to aim for next year ,” Coach Shin Tae-yong analyzed.
