Quang Lac commune, Lang Son city, Lang Son province is considered the largest peach blossom "hub" in the area because of its beautiful, double-petaled, vibrant flowers that last a long time, attracting peach blossom enthusiasts from within and outside the province.
Peach blossom prices are higher this year than in previous years, but peach blossom growers here have already sold out their stock...
In the days leading up to the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Snake 2025, we visited the peach blossom growing area of Quang Lac commune. On the hillsides along the old National Highway 1A, peach blossoms were blooming, displaying their vibrant colors as if heralding the arrival of a new spring. In the peach orchards, the atmosphere was bustling with buying and selling. Many peach trees had been ordered by customers about two months before Tet.
This year, due to the impact of Typhoon No. 3 in early September 2024 and subsequent months without rain, the peach trees were affected and developed slowly. Peach growers in Quang Lac had to intensify their care to ensure the trees developed and bloomed in time for Tet (Lunar New Year), because for the people here, peaches are one of the main crops, bringing high economic value.
Mr. Ha Van Hoi, from Quang Hong 3 village, Quang Lac commune, said that his family has 6 sao (2,160 m2) of land planted with peach trees, with nearly 300 trees, mainly pink and seven-petal peach varieties, which have been planted for 5-7 years and are quite beautiful, suitable for the Tet holiday needs of families. By January 25th, his family had sold all the peach trees to customers. The price of peach trees varies depending on the size, shape, and ratio of buds and flowers. However, even the smallest trees cost from 500,000 to 700,000 VND. Large peach trees with many buds, large flowers, and beautiful shapes can cost from several million to over ten million VND.
Depending on the care given, peach trees typically take about 3 years to grow before they can be sold. Each year, the family earns around 200 million VND, many times more than growing other crops. Thanks to peach cultivation, many households in the commune have become wealthy, building spacious multi-story houses, buying cars and other valuable assets...
Mr. Chu Quoc Khoa, from Quang Trung 2 village, Quang Lac commune, said that his family has more than 500 peach blossom trees, planted from 2 to 8 years old. The average price ranges from 400,000 VND to several million VND, higher by 400,000 VND to over a million VND per tree compared to previous years, depending on the shape and size of the tree. Nearly a month before Tet, 2/3 of the peach blossom trees in his garden had already been ordered by customers from all over. About 10-15 days before Tet, customers will come to pick up the trees to decorate their homes for the holiday. The remaining trees will be sold at the garden. Currently, only a few dozen trees remain that have been ordered by customers, and they will all be picked up in the next one or two days.
Mr. Khoa revealed that, in order to have beautiful peach trees, besides favorable soil and climate conditions for growth and development, the most important factor is the experience in caring for them from the time they are planted until they are ready for sale. Right from the beginning of the new year, the orchard owner will select good, healthy peach tree varieties with thick trunks and relatively good shapes to plant. After the trees are strong, they will proceed with care and fertilization to ensure their growth.
Around the eighth lunar month, the process of bending branches and shaping the tree begins. If weather conditions are normal, by mid-November, the gardener will remove all the peach tree leaves so that the tree can concentrate nutrients on bud formation, ensuring that the flower buds are numerous, evenly distributed, plump, and the flowers are large, with thick petals and beautiful colors. In hot weather, peach growers will remove the leaves later. If the weather is cold, they must remove the leaves earlier.
Each type of peach tree has its own growth and development time, so the timing of leaf stripping is adjusted accordingly. About a month before Tet (Lunar New Year), if the weather is severely cold for an extended period, with temperatures continuously below 10 degrees Celsius for many days, the gardener must water the trees many times a day to ensure adequate moisture, and may even have to turn on electric lights at night and spray foliar fertilizers to stimulate the peach trees to bud and bloom...
The peach blossoms of Quang Lac in particular, and Lang Son in general, are famous and well-known among peach blossom enthusiasts everywhere. They are appreciated for their beautiful, long-lasting blooms, thick petals, and unique shapes and colors of the tree trunks and bark. Many customers from provinces and cities such as Hanoi, Hai Phong, and Vinh Phuc have traveled hundreds of kilometers to the "peach blossom hub" of Quang Lac, hoping to find a suitable peach blossom tree to take home for Tet (Lunar New Year) celebrations...
Mr. Do Van Truong, a peach blossom buyer from Vinh Phuc province, shared that peach blossoms grown in Quang Lac have very vibrant colors and can last for two to three weeks before wilting. Therefore, about a month before the Lunar New Year, he always goes to Quang Lac to find beautiful peach blossom trees, places an order in advance, and then goes to pick them up closer to Tet to decorate his home. This year's weather has been extremely harsh, and the increased care and investment costs have led customers to happily accept the higher prices of peach blossoms this year compared to previous years.
According to Chu Duc Thinh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Lac commune, out of a total of over 2,769 hectares of agricultural land, about 70% is low hilly land, favorable for growing peach trees. Expanding the area under cultivation aims to improve the efficiency and economic value of peach blossoms. With favorable natural conditions and a unique climate, peach blossoms grown in this region possess a distinctive beauty, with double petals and long-lasting blooms, attracting customers from all over. Quang Lac peach blossoms in particular, and Lang Son peach blossoms in general, have gradually become a well-known brand.
Currently, the entire commune has over 100 hectares of peach blossom trees belonging to 78 households, growing varieties such as dwarf peach blossoms, pink peach blossoms, and red peach blossoms. It is estimated that, when reaching maturity, an average of 1 hectare of peach trees can generate an income of 200-300 million VND per year, 3-4 times higher than growing other crops. The innovation in production methods, the introduction of high-economic-value crops like peach trees, and the integration of agricultural production with community tourism in recent years have contributed to increasing the value of agricultural production and income for local people.
Since 2020, some peach orchard owners in Quang Lac have spontaneously experimented with a tourism model, "checking in" (capturing moments) at their peach orchards. By early 2024, the People's Committee of Lang Son City and relevant provincial agencies included the Quang Lac peach growing area in the list, making it an attractive destination for tourists on their journey to explore the beauty of Lang Son City - the city of peach blossoms - by electric car. The peach orchard sightseeing and experience tour is gradually creating a unique highlight, attracting a large number of tourists from near and far, especially during the Lunar New Year and Spring season...
