In previous years, at this time, the peach blossom growing areas in Quang Chinh commune, Thanh Hoa province, were ablaze with the colors of spring. However, this year, due to the impact of natural disasters that occurred in September and October last year, most of the peach trees belonging to the people suffered heavy damage, causing many households to face crop failure and a significant drop in income.
Planting, caring for seedlings, grafting trees... these are tasks that should normally be done after the Lunar New Year peach blossom season. However, at this time, peach growers in Quang Chinh commune, Thanh Hoa province, are carrying out these tasks in the hope of a good harvest next year. This is because this year's Lunar New Year peach blossom crop, which included so much hard work and hope, was almost completely destroyed by natural disasters.
Like most other peach growers in the commune, over 200 peach trees belonging to Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai's family in Phu village were almost completely destroyed. While waiting for new seedlings, Ms. Mai has taken advantage of the time to grow vegetables, both for her own consumption and to sell to earn extra income.
In recent years, the business of growing peach blossoms for Tet (Lunar New Year) has brought high income to the people of Quang Chinh commune. As a result, many households have arbitrarily converted and expanded their cultivation areas in regions unsuitable for peach trees, a type of tree that is very susceptible to flooding.
Therefore, along with restoring the damaged areas, the locality also needs to plan suitable production zones to avoid risks for the people.
