Knew it but still shocked
From May 10, the electricity price was announced to be adjusted to an equivalent increase of 4.8% compared to the current average retail electricity price, the average electricity price increased to more than 2,200 VND/kWh. This information was widely spread by the media. Although they knew this in advance, when it came time to pay their electricity bills, many families were shocked by the high increase, clearly feeling the pressure when holding the bill in their hands.
Mr. Dang Van Hoi, Luong Tru village, Tien Lu commune said: “Previously, my family spent about 700,000 - 900,000 VND on electricity each month. However, last June, the bill increased to nearly 1.3 million VND. Many households in the village, both business and normal households, are in a similar situation, with some households spending more than 2 million VND/month.
In Khoai Chau commune, Mr. Do Quang Chung said: Last month, my family spent about 1.2 million VND on electricity, but this month it suddenly increased to 2.2 million VND. My family has never had to pay such a high electricity bill.
Some small retail stores said they are in a difficult situation because purchasing power has decreased sharply since last year, with no signs of improvement, while raw materials and consumer goods continue to increase steadily. While they are wondering how to improve their business, expenses (including electricity bills) make them even more worried.
Why invoice high electricity bill?
According to experts and representatives of the electricity industry, there are two main reasons for the sharp increase in electricity bills: first, the average retail price of electricity has increased by 4.8% since May 10, 2025, to VND2,204/kWh (excluding VAT). Second, the high temperature causes cooling equipment to operate more, longer, and with greater capacity, leading to a sharp increase in electricity consumption.
Ms. Dinh Thi Hong, Deputy Head of Sales Department, Hung Yen Electricity Company said: Every time summer comes, the number of questions and complaints from customers related to high electricity bills increases. However, after being checked, it was found that the increase was entirely due to the increase in the actual electricity consumption of households, not due to errors in meter readings or bill calculations.
Hung Yen Electricity Company said that since the beginning of May, the electricity consumption of households has continuously increased. Peak hours such as 10am – 2pm and 7pm – 11pm recorded electricity usage far exceeding the average, mainly due to high-capacity devices such as air conditioners, washing machines, induction cookers, water heaters, etc. operating at the same time.
Notably, according to research, air conditioning accounts for 28-64%, sometimes up to 80% of the total electricity consumption of a household in the summer. When the outdoor temperature increases by 1 degree Celsius, the electricity consumption of air conditioning also increases by about 2-3%. That explains why the time of using air conditioning does not change, but the electricity bill increases sharply because the weather is hotter, the machine runs more electricity.
In addition, seemingly harmless habits such as turning the air conditioner temperature too low, not turning off the device when leaving the room, or using many electrical devices at the same time are also the reasons for the bill to "escalate".
How to save electricity?
In the face of prolonged hot weather, Hung Yen Electricity Company recommends that people use electricity economically and efficiently to limit high bills and reduce pressure on the grid. Specifically, it is recommended to turn off unnecessary electrical equipment, avoid using high-power equipment during peak hours (from 10am to 2pm and 7pm to 11pm), and not use many devices at the same time to avoid overload. People should prioritize energy-saving equipment with high-efficiency energy labels, switch to LED bulbs, inverter air conditioners, etc.
In addition, customers can easily track electricity consumption index via the EVNNPC CSKH application or the websites https://npc.com.vn and https://pchungyen.npc.com.vn. The "Meter Index Lookup" and "Electricity Consumption" features help track daily and monthly electricity consumption, and allow setting warning thresholds when exceeding the desired output.
Using electricity economically not only helps reduce living expenses but also contributes to protecting national energy resources, limiting the risk of overload and local power outages during peak hot days.
