Students with disabilities are hoping for the opening of additional high school levels.

With its modern facilities, including classrooms and dormitories, along with a team of experienced teachers, the Lam Dong Center for Supporting Inclusive Education Development (HTPTGDHN) is expected to soon expand to include a high school level, giving students with disabilities the opportunity to continue their education.

The journey of overcoming difficulties to get to school.

Tall, with a bright face and always wearing a cheerful smile, few would guess that Nguyen Dang Khoa (born in 2008, Don Duong commune) is a student with congenital hearing impairment. Khoa is currently in 9th grade at the Lam Dong Center for Supporting Inclusive Education.

Because he lacked the ability to hear and speak like a normal person, Khoa was unable to attend regular classes from a young age. Later, through a friend's recommendation, his family enrolled him in the Lam Dong School for the Deaf. Since then, it has become Khoa's second home, where he lives as a boarding student, only being picked up by his family on weekends.

Since the center currently only teaches up to the 9th grade, this school year is also Dang Khoa's last year there. To continue his studies in the 10th grade, Khoa and many other hearing-impaired students would have to attend specialized schools in Ho Chi Minh City. However, due to difficult economic circumstances, his family cannot afford to send him to school far away.

According to his homeroom teacher, Dang Khoa excels in social science subjects and always wants to continue his studies. "I want to go to 10th grade, because if I drop out now, I don't know what I'll do," Khoa shared using sign language.

Similarly, Ha Ngoc Hai Duong (born in 2007, Duc Trong commune) completed 9th grade three years ago but has been unable to continue her education at high school due to family difficulties, her father's serious illness, and her mother's primary breadwinner. Hai Duong currently works at a cafe for hearing-impaired children at the center, while also waiting for an opportunity to continue her high school education if the center opens a high school program.

Looking forward to more learning opportunities.

Located in Cam Ly ward, Da Lat, the Center for Supporting and Developing Inclusive Education is a public service unit under the Department of Education and Training, established in July 2025 based on the merger of Lam Dong Provincial School for the Deaf and Hoa Phong Lan School for Intellectually Disabled Children.

Currently, the Center has 250 students with disabilities, including 130 hearing-impaired students and 120 intellectually disabled students, most of whom are boarding students; along with 70 administrators, teachers, and staff. The Center provides education from preschool to junior high school.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Minh, the center's principal, for students with intellectual disabilities, the center focuses on early intervention, cultural education, life skills training, and integration support. For hearing-impaired students, the center concentrates on teaching culture, rehabilitation of hearing and speech functions, language development, and communication skills.

According to Ms. Minh, the center's strength lies in its team of experienced teachers in special education; all meet the required training standards, including five deaf teachers who directly participate in teaching and supporting deaf students.

In addition to academic studies, students at the center also learn specialized skills, participate in career guidance and vocational training such as: sewing, embroidery, baking, bartending, tea making, and handicrafts.

In the 2025-2026 school year, the center has 8 students who have completed the lower secondary program and wish to continue their studies at the upper secondary level. In addition, many students who graduated from grade 9 in previous years also wish to return to study at the center if it opens an upper secondary program.

Ms. Minh stated that opening a high school is essential to ensure the right to continuous education for students with disabilities, helping them continue their academic studies, develop skills, orient themselves towards careers, and enhance their ability to integrate into the community. Many localities nationwide have effectively implemented this model. This creates opportunities for students with disabilities to pursue vocational training, higher education, and achieve a stable life.

Given the actual needs and existing facilities, the early opening of a high school level at the center is considered appropriate and has practical significance for the education of students with disabilities in Lam Dong.
