Do you need talent to study design and architecture in the age of AI?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên27/03/2024

This information was shared during the online television counseling program "Choosing a field of study for the future: Design, fine arts, and architecture" which took place yesterday afternoon (March 26) at the following addresses: thanhnien.vn , Facebook Fanpage, YouTube channel, and TikTok of Thanh Nien Newspaper.

SURPRISING JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR ART STUDENTS

Sharing in the program, Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, Vice Rector of Duy Tan University, said that according to statistics on the employment situation of students 12 months after graduation, published last year by the Ministry of Education and Training, arts is one of the fields of study with the highest employment rate for students in the last four years. "This number may be surprising because arts is not among the fields with the most applicants. But contrary to the leading fields in terms of applicants, arts has a higher employment rate. For example, in 2020, this rate in the arts field reached 97% - meaning that out of almost 10 students graduating, nearly all 10 found employment within a year," Dr. Hai added.

Talent, the impact of AI on the design, fine arts, and architecture industries were among the issues raised during the career counseling session held yesterday afternoon (March 26).

Explaining this phenomenon, Dr. Hai stated that among the 24 training fields corresponding to 377 majors, the arts field has a relatively small number of applicants compared to other fields, ranking only 13th out of 24. In 2023, the percentage of applicants admitted to universities was only 1.36% of the total number of admitted students, equivalent to approximately 8,000 students. In 2022, the number was slightly higher but still less than 9,000. Therefore, the level of competition among graduates is not high, leading to a high employment rate for graduates.

In addition, Dr. Hai suggested that one reason might be that this field requires students to have certain aptitudes. "Furthermore, part of the reason could stem from the impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In a world where technology is developing at a breakneck pace, artistic, humanistic, and psychological aspects are more important than ever," the Vice Rector of Duy Tan University added.

Regarding the current state of training and employment in the field of architecture and construction, Dr. Hai stated that in 2023, this field had 18,660 students enrolled. The actual labor market demand for trained personnel needs to reach 75%, but this rate is currently only at 65%. "Another important point regarding employment for architecture students is their ability to create their own jobs. Statistics show that only 20% of architecture students can create their own jobs, 58% work for private companies, and only 8% work for the state," Dr. Hai added.

Ms. Pham Thi Hong Lien, advisor to the Faculty of Architecture and Fine Arts at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, said that the university is currently training students in several new-trend fields, integrating technology into specific areas of study. It can be said that these trend-setting fields create more opportunities for students.

DO SPECIALIZED FIELDS REQUIRE SPECIALIZED ADMISSIONS?

In response to this question, representatives from the schools stated that it depends on each school's admissions process.

At the Vietnamese-German University, Associate Professor Pham Thanh Duong, Head of the Faculty of Engineering, stated that this year the university has five admission methods for its various majors. For the architecture major specifically, the university does not require candidates to take the drawing exam at the university. However, for the method of considering high school graduation exam scores, candidates can use their drawing exam scores from other universities for admission based on the university's specified subject combinations.

Candidates taking the drawing aptitude test.

Regarding the use of the TestAS exam for admission to architecture programs, Associate Professor Duong explained that candidates need to take the exam designed for engineering programs. This exam consists of two parts: basic knowledge and specialized knowledge; it does not test drawing aptitude. The specialized knowledge section will test knowledge of mathematics, physics, and related subjects. Mathematics and physics are mandatory requirements for success in this field. Additionally, aesthetic sense, creativity, and dexterity are considered positive attributes.

"The school doesn't require entrance exams in drawing, but students will be trained in this skill right from their first year. After four years, students will be able to draw by hand, and especially be able to use computer-aided drawing technology," Associate Professor Duong further shared.

Ms. Pham Thi Hong Lien, M.A., also stated that Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology offers different options for candidates applying to these majors. Depending on the admission method, candidates can choose a combination that includes or does not include an aptitude test. If applying based on aptitude test scores, candidates can take the drawing exam at the university or have their drawing scores from other schools considered.

"For candidates applying for admission without using drawing as a subject, the first year of the training program includes courses that provide knowledge and skills in drawing. When entering their major, students continue to practice these skills to meet the requirements before graduation," added Ms. Lien.

Furthermore, Dr. Vo Thanh Hai stated that the arts field has 4 groups with over 30 disciplines, and not all disciplines test drawing aptitude during the entrance examination. For example, Duy Tan University organizes a fine arts drawing exam or uses the scores from other universities' fine arts exams to consider applications for architecture. Meanwhile, the university does not consider drawing aptitude for its graphic design program.

However, according to Dr. Hai, these fields of study still require essential qualities from students. For example, in architecture, mathematics and physics are fundamental, along with a talent for drawing. "If students are not strong in mathematics and physics, they will face difficulties in their studies and may even fail to meet the requirements for graduation," the Vice Rector of Duy Tan University observed.

Technology plays a supporting role.

When choosing arts-related fields, don't worry, PhD. Technology only helps to make a painting, program, or product more perfect, but everything still depends on humans. Artificial intelligence (AI) cannot have emotions like humans to create products with emotions. Machines cannot replace humans, no matter how advanced technology becomes.

As technology develops, so do the arts-related fields.

The dynamics of society are increasingly linked to technological development, and in the arts sector, the more technology develops, the more this field develops. According to statistics from 2023, while the arts group of majors doesn't account for a high percentage, it remains a popular choice for many applicants. Many universities have different admission scores for this group of majors. Some schools have scores of 14-15 points, while others, like the Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, have had scores as high as 27-28 points in some years. The Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance, on the other hand, has admission scores ranging from 19-21 points. This is a relatively high score among the university's training programs, reflecting the interest of students in this field.

Students need to develop an appreciation for beauty.

The use of technology can greatly support all kinds of work, including the fields of fine arts, design, and architecture. Without a talent for drawing, students will certainly face certain obstacles. However, drawing talent can be cultivated. The most essential qualities for those studying in this field are an appreciation for beauty and an open mind. At Nguyen Tat Thanh University, students will receive comprehensive professional training, practical experience, and hands-on learning to apply their skills in real-world work.
