According to Xinhua News Agency on August 28, members of the United Nations Security Council, except the United States, called for an immediate ceasefire as well as a reversal of Israel's decision to expand military operations in Gaza.
"We call for an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. We call for the immediate, honorable and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other forces. We call for a substantial humanitarian relief effort across Gaza," said a joint statement from the 14 members of the UN Security Council.

The 14 countries also called on Israel to immediately reverse its decision to further expand its military operations in Gaza with the aim of occupying Gaza City.
"Israel's decision to expand its military operation will undoubtedly aggravate the already dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and endanger the lives of all civilians, including hostages," the Security Council said in a statement.
The statement by the 14 UN Security Council member states also stressed the need for Israel to immediately and unconditionally lift all restrictions on the delivery of aid, open all land routes, and allow the United Nations and humanitarian partners to operate safely and on a large scale (in Gaza).

"Time is of the essence. The humanitarian emergency must be resolved immediately and Israel must reverse its actions," the statement said.
Fourteen countries have also expressed deep concern and sorrow at the reality of severe famine in Gaza.
"This is a man-made crisis. The famine in Gaza must end immediately. International humanitarian law must be respected," the statement stressed.
