Twenty-eight rare turtles belonging to the species Northern yellow-headed box turtle, Central yellow-headed box turtle, sand turtle, and Spengler land turtle have been repatriated from South Korea to Cuc Phuong National Park ( Ninh Binh ) for care and nurturing before being reintegrated into the wild.
The 28 turtles originated from hunting in Vietnam, were then illegally trafficked, and were discovered and seized by South Korean authorities. They were then handed over to the National Institute of Ecology of South Korea for care. After a period of care, the turtles were repatriated and handed over to Cuc Phuong National Park for continued care and monitoring to support conservation breeding, conservation education , and the possibility of reintroduction into their natural environment.
Kyuho Kang, a research expert at the Animal Rescue Management Division of the National Institute of Ecology of Korea, said the turtles were seized by South Korean authorities at Incheon International Airport in connection with illegal pet trafficking.
