Tottenham had a nightmare match at Atletico Madrid's stadium. |
Tottenham Hotspur continues to receive bad news as they have been sanctioned by UEFA following a chaotic match against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 round of 16 on March 11th.
According to a decision announced by UEFA, Spurs were fined €10,000 for delays that caused the match to start late. In addition, the North London club also received a further €10,000 fine for "improper conduct" due to receiving five yellow cards during the tense encounter in the Spanish capital.
That match perfectly reflected Tottenham's disastrous season. The English team were 0-4 down midway through the first half. Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was substituted by then-manager Igor Tudor after just 17 minutes following two mistakes that led to goals conceded.
Spurs lost 2-5 in the first leg and were eliminated 5-7 on aggregate after winning 3-2 in the second leg at home. Following that defeat, Tudor left his position and was replaced by Roberto De Zerbi.
However, Tottenham's challenge now lies not in Europe but in a domestic battle for survival. The London club is currently ranked 18th and is still in the relegation zone, trailing West Ham by two points.
De Zerbi signed a five-year contract but immediately faced immense pressure. The Italian manager even hired a new first-team psychologist after admitting the player needed a mental boost.
Following the painful 2-2 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion on April 18th, De Zerbi tried to inspire the team by declaring that Tottenham could still win all five remaining matches.
This weekend, Spurs face a crucial away game against Wolverhampton Wanderers. In the midst of a crisis, any mistake at this point could cost them their entire season.
