According to a supply chain report cited by AppleInsider on March 26th, Apple has finalized its roadmap for phasing out the Dynamic Island design. Specifically, Apple is quietly developing technology to embed the entire front-facing camera sensor assembly beneath the display panel.
However, the report also emphasized that this hardware "overhaul" will not happen overnight, but will be divided into several cautious transitional phases.
According to the plan, the Dynamic Island section will be compressed into a small notch. Eventually, this notch will completely disappear, leaving a single punch-hole for the selfie camera.
This roadmap also aligns with supply chain reports and analyst expectations over the years, as Apple strives to eliminate screen notches without compromising Face ID performance.
Additionally, iPhone manufacturers often implement major hardware changes in stages to minimize risks while refining the technology. If this plan holds true, future iPhones will have a more streamlined design while retaining core security features.
Nevertheless, placing Face ID under the screen also presents significant technical challenges. The system relies on infrared projectors, point mapping, and precise alignment. However, all of this is degraded when placed beneath the layers of material of the OLED panel.
Android manufacturers have experimented with placing cameras under the screen, but image quality is often degraded and sensor reliability can be affected due to limited light transmission.
Instant Digital reports that the iPhone 18 Pro will feature an under-display Face ID lighting system. In theory, this change would help reduce the size of the Dynamic Island notch on the device.
Other supporting components, such as spotlights and infrared cameras, remain housed in the same cutout. MacRumors quotes veteran analyst Ross Young as also agreeing with this rumor.
