Integration and internationalization in scientific research

Hành trình 48 năm xây dựng, UEH đã khẳng định vị trí quan trọng trong hệ thống giáo dục đại học Việt Nam

Over its 48-year journey of development, UEH has affirmed its important position in the Vietnamese higher education system.

According to reports, UEH is one of the first universities in the country to achieve FIBAA (European) Institutional Accreditation, and is ranked among the Top 401+ best universities in Asia (according to QS Asia 2023). Most recently, the university also led Vietnamese universities in contributing to 17 of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals in the THE Impact Rankings 2023. To achieve this success, the university emphasized two key strategies.

Developing scientific research from within is a crucial foundation for improving the quality of education to meet international standards.

Implementing the Party and State's policy of international integration, UEH's strategy to promote autonomy and internationalization in training, scientific research, and university administration began in 2012, based on the solid foundation of a prestigious national key public university.

During this process, the university has focused on developing academic research, international publications, and community service based on its internal strengths. Over the past 10 years, UEH has implemented numerous research capacity building programs for its staff; implemented groundbreaking policies in rewarding, funding, and encouraging high-quality publications, alongside establishing management regulations and rules on academic integrity. This explains the increasing number of scientific articles published in prestigious international journals, reaching over 500 articles per year, averaging more than 0.5 articles per lecturer, and the growing number of lecturers with internationally published scientific research, accounting for nearly 40%. Of these, 85% of articles are published in journals ranked Q1 and Q2 in the Scopus scientific database, and over 50% of publications are linked to the 17 SDGs (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals).

According to the university, knowledge from research recognized by the global scientific community serves as the input for lectures and the foundation for high-quality, internationally standardized training programs for students. To date, UEH has 7 training programs that meet AUN-QA standards (ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance) and 9 training programs that meet FIBAA standards (European International Accreditation Standards), as well as achieving these international standards at the university level.

Academic integrity and a proactive approach to challenges are fundamental to sustainable development.

Developing research and publishing internationally is a relatively new "internationalization" capability for universities in Vietnam. Even prestigious, long-established universities with experience worldwide face risks in this process. For UEH, proactively integrating based on internal strengths, learning from the management experiences of universities around the world, and frankly identifying and adjusting shortcomings in the implementation process are crucial foundations for overcoming this challenge.

Since 2012, the university has gradually refined its Code of Integrity in Scientific Research to promote the sustainable development of scientific research. Simultaneously, the Academic Integrity Council was established to assess the ethical and scientific aspects of research for approval and acceptance; support academic research projects; regularly warn about journals excluded from ISI and Scopus lists, lists of predatory and fraudulent publishers; and "research traps" that scientists may fall into. Also in the spirit of academic integrity, the scientific journal JABES (Journal of Asian Business and Economics Studies ) – one of the first Vietnamese journals in the field of economics and business – was ranked in the top Q1 of the Scopus ranking, helping the university achieve a significant step forward in its internationalization process.

In this way, over the years, the university has been able to listen to and provide timely support to scientists, especially young scientists, as they embark on their research careers. At the same time, it has resolutely handled violations according to established procedures, even if they may stem from a lack of understanding or experience in citing references, processing data, or mistakenly selecting low-quality journals, as seen in some cases related to scientific integrity recently.

"UEH will continue its path of internationalization through research capabilities that contribute to Vietnam's development and knowledge for the global scientific community, to be worthy of being a key national public university of Vietnam. We choose to follow the main path using the internal strength of our lecturers and staff. We say no to and resolutely deal with deviant behavior and individuals who violate the standards," said Professor Nguyen Dong Phong, Chairman of the University Council.
