Uli Hoeness mocked Barcelona. |
According to Hoeness, Bayern did not accept the exorbitant asking prices for players like Florian Wirtz and Nick Woltemade, citing the need to avoid falling into the same financial predicament as Barcelona. "Max Eberl ( Sporting Director) wants to buy a player, but we know our financial situation. This is just as important as achieving success in sports. Look at Barcelona. If you keep buying players constantly, you end up owing €1.2 billion," Hoeness stated.
Bayern's honorary president also addressed the tensions within the club's leadership during the recent transfer window. He acknowledged that disagreements are normal when the team wants to upgrade the squad but without being overly extravagant with money.
"I often argued with Rummenigge (the former CEO) in the past. But when the transfer window closed, everything was fine," Hoeness said.
Despite missing out on signing Wirtz and Woltemade, Hoeness still believes Bayern had a successful transfer window. He emphasized that the current squad is strong enough to compete in all competitions.
During the recent summer transfer window, Bayern spent €88 million to bring in Luis Diaz, Nicolas Jackson, Jonathan Tah, and Tom Bischof. Conversely, the "Bavarian giants" earned nearly €100 million from selling Mathys Tel, Kingsley Coman, Paul Wanner, and Joao Palhinha, in addition to letting Leroy Sane, Eric Dier, and Thomas Muller leave on free transfers.
