Geovani Silva's departure shocked Brazilian football. |
Brazilian football is shrouded in grief as Geovani Silva, a former player who won the 1989 Copa America with the "Selecao," passed away after suddenly falling ill in Vila Velha, Espirito Santo state, on May 18th.
According to his family, the Vasco da Gama legend was taken to the hospital in critical condition in the early morning. Despite doctors' efforts to resuscitate him, he did not survive. Relatives described this as a sudden and painful loss for the entire family.
Geovani was once nicknamed "The Little Prince" by Brazilian fans for his smooth, skillful, and spontaneous playing style. He rose to prominence playing for Vasco da Gama in 1982, later becoming one of the biggest icons of the Rio de Janeiro team.
During his three stints with Vasco, Geovani played a total of 408 matches and scored 49 goals. He played alongside legends such as Romario and Roberto Dinamite, contributing to the club's numerous state titles.
At the senior national team level, Geovani made a strong impression from a young age. He won the 1983 U20 World Cup as the tournament's top scorer and also scored the winning goal against Argentina in the final.
The former midfielder then went on to win a silver medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics before winning the 1989 Copa America with the Brazilian national team.
In his final years, Geovani constantly battled illness. He was hospitalized for cardiovascular complications, spinal cancer, and polyneuropathy. Late last year, the former Brazilian star spent 40 days in the hospital after suffering two cardiac arrests.
Nevertheless, Geovani still appeared at football events and emotionally shared in February that simply being alive was something to celebrate.
