Intel representatives declined to provide details about the deal's value or the percentage of shares held in Articul8 AI, the new company which will not be publicly traded and is the result of a collaboration between Intel and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) on enterprise AI technology development.
Intel used one of its proprietary supercomputers to develop an artificial intelligence system capable of interpreting text and images. This system integrates open-source elements with Intel's proprietary technology and has been adapted to operate within BCG's data centers, addressing security and privacy requirements.
Arun Subramaniyan, former vice president and general manager of Intel's data center and AI group, who is expected to lead Articul8 as CEO, said that many other potential customers are also expressing similar concerns about transferring data to large cloud computing companies when performing AI tasks.
In addition, cost is also a major issue when businesses deploy large-scale solutions for thousands of employees.
"We are trying to address the biggest gap in generative AI today, which is the bottleneck between the ease of conceptualizing the technology, and the difficulty of producing and implementing it safely and sustainably," Subramaniyan said.
Intel's creation of Articul8 is the latest move to seek external funding to support its business units.
Previously, Intel had also spun off its automotive chip company Mobileye Global and planned for the initial public offering of its programmable chip unit.
