Intel representatives declined to provide details on the deal value or the stake in Articul8 AI, the new company that will not be publicly traded and is the result of Intel's partnership with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to develop enterprise AI technology.
Intel used one of its proprietary supercomputers to develop an artificial intelligence system capable of interpreting text and images. The system integrates open source elements with Intel proprietary technology and has been customized to operate in BCG’s data centers, addressing security and privacy requirements.
Arun Subramaniyan, former vice president and general manager of Intel's data center and AI group, who is expected to lead Articul8 as CEO, said many other potential customers are expressing similar concerns about turning over data to large cloud computing companies when performing AI tasks.
In addition, cost is also a big issue when businesses deploy on a large scale for thousands of employees.
“We are trying to address the biggest gap in generative AI today, which is the bottleneck between easy to conceptualize, but not easy to manufacture and implement the technology safely and sustainably,” said Subramaniyan.
Intel's creation of Articul8 is the latest move to seek outside funding to support its business units.
Intel also previously spun off its automotive chip company Mobileye Global and plans to hold an initial public offering of its programmable chip unit.
