With this vulnerability, hackers can execute arbitrary code with their own privileges on the machine. This will cause users to lose control of the device as well as have their personal data stolen.
"The above security flaw is related to the Triangulation cyber attack. This attack is performed by sending iMessage messages with malicious attachments," according to Android Authority.
Spyware can be automatically installed on an iPhone even if the user has not opened the message. It will then silently steal personal information including audio recordings, images, location data or passwords on the phone.
"Many devices have been attacked through the above method. Therefore, users need to quickly install this updated version to avoid data theft," according to the Washington Post.
Users can update iOS 16.5.1 for compatible iPhones by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
