According to Macrumors , sources from The Elec indicate that all four versions of the iPhone 17 will use LTPO OLED display panels. This means that the standard iPhone 17 models will also feature 120Hz ProMotion display technology and Always-on Display, similar to the Pro versions.
Currently, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus use low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) panels, while the iPhone 15 Pro models use the more advanced LTPO polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panels.
LTPO panels support ProMotion, allowing the display to increase refresh rates up to 120Hz for smoother scrolling and video viewing when needed.
ProMotion also allows the display to reduce its power-saving refresh rate to 1Hz. This helps the iPhone 15 Pro display the clock, widgets, notifications, and lock screen wallpaper even when the device is locked.
Apple is expected to continue using the less advanced LTPS panel for this year's iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus to maintain the differentiation between the standard and "Pro" models. Thus, Apple's 2025 iPhone lineup will for the first time feature ProMotion and always-on displays on both the standard and premium versions.
According to The Elec , Chinese display manufacturer BOE is hoping to secure a deal to supply LTPO panels for the iPhone 17 series. However, BOE is under scrutiny regarding its ability to produce the necessary output while maintaining Apple's stringent quality standards.
If BOE cannot meet the requirements, Apple may switch to other suppliers such as Samsung and LG Display for LTPO panels. In that case, BOE would only produce LTPS panels for older iPhone models and the iPhone SE 4.
More reasons to wait for the iPhone 17
According to display analyst Ross Young, this year's iPhone 16 Pro models will have a larger aspect ratio of 19.6:9.
Additionally, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max screens are expected to increase in size from 6.12 and 6.69 inches, respectively, to 6.27 and 6.86 inches, a 2.5% increase on both devices.
This size change on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max may be applied to the standard iPhone 17 models next year.

Besides the screen upgrade, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus will have many other attractive features, making this duo worth waiting for by iPhone fans.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from TF International Securities stated that the iPhone 17 will feature a 24MP selfie camera. This information was revealed in an article by Kuo on Medium. For comparison, the current iPhone 15 only has a 12MP front camera with a 5-element structure, and the iPhone 16 series is also not expected to have a breakthrough in selfie cameras.
However, with the iPhone 17, Apple may upgrade the selfie camera to 24MP with a lens consisting of 6 elements. Mr. Kuo said this upgrade will significantly improve the image quality of the front camera, resulting in more detailed and sharper photos. The quality of selfie photos will be maintained even when cropped or zoomed in.
