The IRNA news agency reported today (May 23) that in a letter sent to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and UN Security Council President Fu Cong, Iranian Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani rejected claims made by the US during a meeting on May 19 that Tehran was responsible for the drone attack on the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Mr. Iravani stated: “Iran is the victim of attacks from the United States and Israel targeting peaceful nuclear facilities monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Any attack or threat against peaceful nuclear infrastructure constitutes a grave violation of international law, the UN Charter, and the IAEA Statute and resolutions.”
The Iranian ambassador then accused the US, along with Israel, of carrying out attacks on numerous nuclear facilities managed by Tehran, "but now claiming to care about nuclear security and safety." According to him, Washington and Tel Aviv are pursuing policies that destabilize the Middle East, and the current situation is a consequence of two conflicts against Iran.
Al Jazeera reported that the Barakah nuclear power plant in the UAE was attacked by a drone on May 17. According to a statement from UAE officials at the time, the attack "did not affect the safety of the plant, nor did it impact essential systems, and all units are operating normally."
