According to a leak from China, the next generation of iPhones may go against the trend of thin and light. Instead, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will become the heaviest phone Apple has ever produced.
This information was shared by the Instant Digital account on the social network Weibo, who has repeatedly provided accurate leaks about Apple products. Accordingly, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will have some changes in size.
The thickness of the device is said to increase slightly compared to the iPhone 17 Pro Max (8.75 mm). This change could make the weight of the iPhone 18 Pro Max up to 243 g.
If true, this would make it the heaviest model ever produced by Apple, surpassing the current record held by the iPhone 14 Pro Max at 240g. For comparison, the current iPhone 17 Pro Max weighs 233g.
Instant Digital didn't explain the specific cause of the weight difference, but according to AppleInsider , it could be due to changes to the internal hardware, such as an increase in physical battery capacity.
Instant Digital previously revealed that Apple is planning a "miniature notch" for the iPhone 18. This could refer to the Dynamic Island notch taking up less space at the top of the screen with the iPhone model launching in 2026.
The reason for this shrink, according to Instant Digital, is due to changes in the components in the front camera section. While this could be done by creating an under-display version of Face ID, the leaker added that this design will not happen on the iPhone 18.
By placing the TrueDepth system's cameras and sensors under the surface of the display, this would allow for a device with a beautiful, completely notch-free display. However, this is technically challenging because the various sensors have to work behind the pixels.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models are expected to launch in September 2026, so it's still too early to confirm Apple's final decision on the design for the device.
