Used iPhones tend to retain their value better than Android phones, and Apple also provides longer software support, with an iPhone model receiving new operating system updates for about five years after its initial release. At the recent WWDC 2023 developer conference, Apple introduced iOS 17 and the devices that will no longer be supported this year will include the iPhone X and the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.
iPhone 8/8 Plus and iPhone X will stop receiving major iOS updates from this year
This means that the above models will not be equipped with new features such as StandBy or more accurate spelling correction mode. The iPhone 8/8 Plus/X will also become more "fragile" against cyber attacks. In addition, the suspension of iOS updates is also a sign of a big price drop of devices on the used market, according to data from the used phone trading website SellCell.
In 2022, after Apple announced that the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7/7 Plus could not update to iOS 16, these models lost nearly 43% of their resale value between the release of iOS 16 Beta (June 6) and the official release on September 12 of the same year.
On average, each phone lost about 7.8% of its resale value in the first week after a new iOS Beta became available, and that gradually increased, surpassing 30% around the end of August and reaching 42.8% by September 12.
The same could happen with the iPhone 8/8 Plus/X. If the formula is followed correctly, the end of June is the period when these three old iPhones have the highest resale prices, before plummeting in the following weeks.
The iPhone 8/8 Plus and iPhone X were launched in 2017, have gone through 5 major iOS releases since their launch and have now received updates for 6 consecutive years, more than any Android phone on the market today.
