Apple has just released the iOS 26.4.2 update to address a critical security vulnerability that could allow deleted messages on iPhones to remain in the device's memory. According to Apple, this bug stems from a notification system that indicates when some content, even after being deleted by the user, is still stored locally, creating a risk of unauthorized access.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation stated that this vulnerability had been exploited to retrieve push notification data, including messages that would otherwise have been lost completely.
Notably, the incident came to light when the Federal Bureau of Investigation used digital forensics tools to access Signal notification data on iPhones, even after users had deleted messages.
The CEO of Signal confirmed this was a serious vulnerability, as notifications for deleted messages should not continue to exist in the operating system's database. In the latest patch, Apple adds a "better data obfuscation" mechanism to ensure that deleted notifications will not be saved in any form on the device. Security experts recommend that iPhone users from iPhone 11 and later update to iOS 26.4.2 as soon as possible to avoid the risk of private message leaks.
In addition, users should also disable the display of message content on the lock screen and review notification settings to enhance the protection of personal data during use.
