Apple's 20th-anniversary iPhone is expected to go on sale in 2027. This flagship device is rumored to have improved image quality thanks to changes in camera sensor technology.

According to the popular South Korean online portal Naver, Apple will add LOFIC technology to its cameras in 2027, coinciding with the launch of the 20th anniversary iPhone.
The source also added that Apple is not alone in using LOFIC, as major Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Huawei and Xiaomi also use this technology on their flagship models.
Although Apple is using LOFIC with its own CMOS sensor, its rival Samsung still lacks a concrete roadmap for using this technology. Meanwhile, Samsung is developing its own camera sensors to sell to Apple, competing with supplier Sony.
Apple has been developing its own camera sensor for some time and created a prototype in August.
LOFIC stands for Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor – a technology used in CMOS sensors. This technology helps process the amount of light received at each pixel much more efficiently than conventional sensors.

When a photodiode receives too much light, the excess charge is stored in a capacitor located within the same pixel. This significantly expands the range of light levels that each pixel can capture.
In other words, LOFIC helps the sensor capture better detail in both bright and dark areas, while maintaining detail throughout the entire frame. This significantly improves image quality.
While conventional HDR photography involves combining multiple images with different exposures (highlights and shadows), LOFIC performs this process in a single shot, completely eliminating artifacts caused by movement between images.
This technology can be applied to both photography and videography. LOFIC sensors are capable of extending the dynamic range up to 20 stops, equivalent to high-end cinema cameras, while current iPhones only achieve about 13 stops.
