Al Jazeera news agency quoted Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei today (May 25) as emphasizing that negotiations between Iran and the US are focused on ending the conflict and that Tehran is not currently discussing details related to the nuclear issue.

Baghaei stated: “We recognize the facts, regardless of the perceptions and descriptions of the other side (the US). We are focused on establishing and developing the best methods to protect Iran’s national interests. When necessary, we will respond. We have our own methods and will not copy the methods and approaches of the other side… At this stage, we are not discussing the nuclear issue; Iran’s focus is on ending the conflict.”
The Iranian spokesman also acknowledged that “there is no guarantee that the US will respect its commitments in a potential agreement” and that Tehran is not concerned with threats.
Baghaei then mentioned the Strait of Hormuz, revealing that Tehran “is in contact with countries bordering this strategic waterway to ensure security and protect their interests,” and stated that “although conclusions have been reached on most of the topics discussed in a memorandum of understanding with the US, this does not mean that Iran and the US are about to sign an agreement.”
The Iranian spokesperson made these statements amidst Fox News reporting on May 24th, citing unnamed US officials, that talks with Iran were "about 90-95% complete."
